Anyone else using the Little Mark II with no pre-amp?

I installed a Bass Max pickup on my upright and have been fiddling with EQ using both my Fishman pre-amp into the LM II and going straight into the head with no pre-amp.

I find using the pre-amp really does little and going straight into the head is more convenient.

Do you do this? What are your EQ levels at? Do you use the VLE at all?

I've been using one for a few months and getting a great sound with no preamp and very little EQ. My main axe is an old German flatback strung with mittels and using a Realist. It has a very clear, punchy tone acoustically. Getting a good tone first and amplifying that is essential. That bass amplifies a bit darker than its acoustic sound, but not by much.
My old ply sounds very dark, even with mittels and using a Full Circle. It comes through the amp a little brighter, probably due to the pickup choice.
EQ? Almost always dead flat, but with the VPF anywhere from 9:00 to 12:00. This knob sucks out some mids and gives a fat and warm tone but with some highs for clarity.
With either bass, I've gotten lots of compliments on my sound; punchy, warm and pretty much like my basses. My cabinet is always a single DIY 12" which has a pure tone to begin with.

I also have a Fishman Pre (Pro Platinum EQ) and used it some instead of the Preamp in my Focus, but have never tried it with the LMII. It's nice to know that I can always get my sound with no fuss.:D

With my gear & a Full Circle pickup, I feel there is a tremendous improvement with a good buffer (currently using the one made & sold by TB'er fdeck - also had great results with a Countryman DI, which provides a good use for the XLR input on the LMII).

For the electric, I like some VLE & VPF (about 9 o'clock) for coloration but for upright I leave both all the way down for the most natural sound possible. I do add a dash of hi-mids sometimes - adds punch & definition and seems to better match the acoustic sound.

Absolutely YMMV. ;)
