"Local pick up only" (Reverb) rant...

I don't mind it except they need to have some filters in place, like letting you turn off ads that are 500 miles or more away.

I ran onto this shopping for double bass, which is understandable why shipping is not an option most of the time.

I'm slap in the middle of the US and don't want to sift through ads that are several states away.

I would like to at least see the location on the listing without having to click on it and scan around to find the location.

You’re not weird. Instead, you forgot (or didn’t know) one of the unwritten rules of TalkBass which is this:
  • Any type of buying or selling issue you experience (no matter how in the right you are) will be turned around and blamed on you within one page of responses
A similar unwritten rule is as follows:
  • If a TBr vents, then they should expect to be shamed and/or rebuked ala:
    • “First world problems”
    • “How does this post change anything?”
    • Yada yada yada
It’s a rite of passage to be flamed on TalkBass for this type of thread. My initiation was a thread wondering why everyone likes TI Flats so much….:thumbsup:

I have. Two in the last month.

From Portugal to The Netherlands, 62€, payed by the buyer.

From Portugal to Denmark, 84€, split cost between me and the buyer.

Used to trade basses a lot with Bass Direct, in the UK. Bass Gallery, too.

Traded one bass for another, Portugal/Switzerland.

My DB came shipped, too.

The OP is asking about buying a second “Jazz 24 “ as a back up bass.
Here in Canada we often do not receive a lot of the Bass they have access to in the States.
A Jazz bass 24 is a 24 fret bass is it not? Made for Fender in Japan once upon a time.
If any of you Bass gurus could fill me in I would appreciate it.

seems like ALOT of negative comments.
That being said TB is filled with guys who just want to be heard due to some other failures they’ve had. So don’t make their negativity how you feel. I’d offer to pay for shipping and let the seller know you fully understand something may happen. I’d use UPS I’ve sold basses plenty of times here on TB and have used UPS 99.9% of the time. Each time it arrived safely with no issues. You can tell the seller to go to a UPS store you can call that UPS store and pay for the box and packing material. I’ve done it before on REVERB and it’s worked with no issue. I just let the seller know that I’m taking responsibility for the shipping and what may happen that he’s off the hook.

See a bit of positivity and actual thinking can solve problems. Now back to everyone being negative I hope you can get the bass you want. :hyper:

I do local pick up only on a couple of local gear sites. If it's on Reverb I'll ship(it's in the price).
I did have a Reverb sale with a guy who lived a couple miles from me so we did the local pickup thing.

I sold a 4x10 speaker cabinet years ago on Ebay. The auction was clearly marked as local pickup only, I had no easy way to box and ship. So, a guy from Maryland (I am in Illinois :poop:) won the auction and then got mad because I would not ship. Sorry, not my problem, you did something my auction told you not to do. Anyway, he ended up having Fed Ex pick it up and ship it with no packaging...ok with me. Worst part, it was a Peavey cabinet, not expensive and IMO, not worth the work.

It's a bit of work to pack up anything for shipping. Because I have issues with energy levels, I won't do it. I'd gladly pay someone a reasonable percentage of sales price to do that work, but UPS store gouges you on this.

Like you said, seller's choice. Not all of us want to spend our time packing things up.

I've long-labored under the assumption that any viable potential buyer is also a TB member...not true. If I can can canvass a widened scope of a specific geographic market (i.e. within driving distance) via more heavily-tracked platforms, there's a better chance I may snag a motivated buyer. I have a couple of reasonably-priced heavy pieces available but adding shipping would make it a less-than-stellar deal.

IME when a seller writes 'local pick-up only, no shipping', usually there's some undeclared defects that would be worth mentioning to customer, but if you bought the bass in person, he assumes that you get what you've tried and that's fair.

usually the most items I see this attitude is some kind of a vintage guitar with questionable playability. if that's an obvious piece of crap, no problems with shipping. if the condition and set-up is obviously good, no problems with shipping. but if the seller is not really sure, he tries to make it hand-to-hand.

YMMV, as I'm not in the US (and shipping a bass or a guitar here is easier and cheaper, from what I know).

Back near 20yrs ago when I lived in AK that wasn't true. Checking now on the USPS calculator and it looks like the difference for me to send a 15lb, 48lx16wx8h package from here in Wi to either Portland, OR or Honolulu, HI is about $23 ($135 vs $158) and 1 day, since the 2 day priority isn't an option for HI.

Which is a difference but at this cost already, it's not a major one. Looks like maybe it got better since then, or I remembered wrong!

Shipping is crazy expensive. Packaging is difficult and expensive. So is the insurance for the shipper.

But here’s the worst part, someone's gonna buy a bass and not like it as much as they hoped and they’ll find a scratch on the back that wasn’t disclosed and they’ll demand their money back. The seller probably knows what’s up.
As a buyer I’d rather pick up so I can see it first. Plus I know it will arrive safer. As a seller I’ll list small items like pedals on Reverb but would not want the grief and risk of trying to ship a bass. I totally empathize with the seller.

Utter BS.

When someone lists something for local sale it just means they don't want the hassle of packing and shipping. and the headaches that go with both.

Good lord, people will read nefarious intent into ANYTHING.

sold a Marshall 1960a slant cab and a digitech 2120 local pickup only once. Guy drove to Georgia from Michigan to pick it up. If people want it, they will drive for it.

I only sell local pickup only. I dont have time for scammers or BS shipping issues.

Sold a hartke 3500 locally recently. Buyer came over, tried it out, left happy. Bumped into the buyer in a store recently and he said the head doing just fine for him still. If the ad clearly says local pickup only I don't see the problem.
