Looking at the cheapest way to be actually legal with that stupid law that outlaws independent musicians, I thought of getting a contractor's license which is exempted in the law.
Specially the "low-voltage cabling" contractor license. After all, we install low voltage cabling, and then de-install it after the gig. I've heard here many times that's what we get paid for anyway. The plus side is that one can bill over $500 per job, and do much more than installing cabling between the bass and amp, amp to cabs, etc.
The downside is fees but those are not near incorporation fees and minimum taxes. It does require a bond, but those can be had for about $75/yr which might be advantageous.
