Log or Lin pots?

You could put a thousand of those pots in series, and let each one of them be responsible for fine tuning the resistance over a thousandth of the total range. Then you would have the most precise volume control known to man, and the Guinness World Record people would give you a prize or something.

Additionally, I've found that I get better response out of volume pots (audio and linear taper) by adding an additional resistor between the "ground" lug of the pot and the ground wire/bus in the bass. This effectively limits how "low" the volume pot can go (which also makes it impossible to mute the bass by turning the volume all the way down) but increases the smoothness and gives you more fine-grained control over your volume in a live situation.

For example, with a 500K pot, I would connect one lead of a 50K or 100K resistor to the "ground" lug of the pot, and then connect the other lead to my bass's ground bus. For a 250K pot, I would use a 25K or 50K resistor. I've tested this idea on several basses, and it seems to work well for me.

Your trick matches well with what I have read about volume controls. I've often read that you want a 30% audio taper for the smoothest volume control whereas today the typical audio taper is 10 or 15%. My problem with your trick is that I am one of those people who mostly use the volume knob as an on/off switch!

does anyone know (or have tried both)
and that with the mojo tone 30% taper pots for volume, you don't need linear to get a good blend between 2 j pups..
am lookin to get 2 500k linears for a jazz that came with 250 linears (full size) but i need more top end!
any thoughts appreciated.. p

Does adding this resistor on the ground lug apply to p and j basses?
 
Audio tapers make the best volume controls. Audio tapers are not log tapers even though they are very commonly called that. They are actually anti-log or exponential tapers. I believe those who say that 30% audio tapers best match the human ear's response. I believe them but I have not compared them to other tapers myself. It is fairly hard to find anything other than 10 or 15% tapers.

The trouble is that although we all call them volume pots we do not all use them as volume controls. Some of us do and would be happiest with 30% audio tapers, if what I have read is true.

Some of us, like me, basically use them as on/off switches during performances and only secondarily as volume controls when practicing at home. We could be satisfied with pretty much any taper. It just doesn't matter that much to us.

Some of us use them as blend controls on VVT basses. If you are really serious about finessing your blend you would probably be happiest with actual log taper pots which are very rare indeed as far as I can tell. An actual log taper pot would change very slowly as you turn it down from max, which is exactly what you want when you are finessing your blend. Then once you turn it down below 50% it will start to drop like a rock but presumably when you get to that point you are intending to turn it all the way down and solo the other pickup anyway. A linear taper pot gets you closer to this condition than an audio taper even though it is not the best you could do for a blend taper.

What about C500k reverse log pots? have few of these in mini size,, P
 
They are audio pots but the taper is reversed so that full CW is zero output and full CCW is full output if you ground the CW terminal and connect the CCW terminal to the signal hot path. I believe they are intended to be used in conjunction with conventional audio pots to make L/R balance controls and alone as frequency setting controls where you want an audio taper but full resistance CCW and zero resistance CW to sweep a frequency from low to high as you turn the knob CW. I think that if you reverse the hot and ground connections you will get what you want: a volume control that decreases slowly as you turn it down from 10 to 5 to give you fine control over your blend and then starts to drop like a rock to shut that pickup off full as you turn down from 5.
