Logic vs. Gas

So I've gone thru some major gear changes lately. Found my sonic match in the form of a lakland 55-02 thru a lil mark and 2 gs112s. Pure simple sonic bliss. But...... I sold all that trying to get my family into a house. Thought I was doing the grown up thing and it felt good even though I found a good match after some 15-20 basses. Since I the deal fell thru we are in another apartment and I just have my lil 4 strings. I am a 5'er guy at heart but one is my 1st bass, another my fiance got me (sx), and the other I cant deciede to sale. All I have is a lil cheap combo amp.

So enough with the back story. I thought I had my mind made up. Get me a 55-01 used in good shape. Then, outfit it with nordstrand pick ups and pre. After that add a plek and bone nut. with the fact I would do my own shielding and electronics I would have a killer modern sounding j-ish bass that rivals most big names for less than a Fender USA standard.........

But why does this somewhat beat up custom 5 string envade my toughts all day. The top, the tone, the feel of that wide flat neck that my hands just feel so at home on. But, for the cost I could built my 55-01 and get a new amp and cab..... What to do what to do. And add to that its time I got me a family car. :help: aww this sucks.

Answer...Squier Deluxe Active V...try it...you'll like it... you can have it for $270...

when you have enough $$ (save) you can get another 55-02...

next time...don't sell the "sonic bliss"...

as far as cars...I drive a '97 Suzuki 'cino...(upgraded from a '95 Hyundai excel)...
wife drives a used Kia Carnival (people mover, america has a different name for it)...
bottom line...cars are liabilities...only drive what you need and NO MORE...

For most of us GAS is not just about logic. There is stuff we like, and stuff we think is cool. Back during New Year, I was in NYC and a/b'ed my Fender Jazz Deluxe V with a couple of Sadowskys, and the I ultimately liked the UV70 better than my Fender, but to tell you the truth, the UV70 did not blow my Fender away, and I felt my Fender hung in there very well with a Sadowsky MS5, especially when it came to slap. The bottom line was that the Sadowskys are cool, great looking basses that have a killer rep. My Fender is a nice bass that I could pick up at any GC or Sam Ash in the country.

Some bassists are very practical. Marcus Miller knew he had a good thing with his Jazz and never changed. The same with Jamie Jamerson or even Louis Johnson, who is still rockin' his Pre-Ernie Ball Stingray. The rest of us are very trend and fashion conscious. That is not bad, but it is not based on logic either.:confused:

well the car is going to be a dodge charger. decent milage and price. got saftey features for my son and can haul a ton of gear. I didnt like the squier after I sold my lakland I have played so many fair priced 5's and did not get the same feel. squier, mim fender deluxe, sx, peavey bxp and usa, tbc, and etc. This dang beat up worn in custom won me over though. Those bart quad coil pick ups agi pre.....mmmmmmmm Just I am not gigging and thats a lot of coin for whats more of a passion and hobby than job ya know but part of me is really trying to think of a way to get the loot and convince the fiance not to leave me lol

My brother, remember that you are awfully young, and I really admire you for being a solid family man.:) Keep some perspective and remember that some of the really big GAS hogs are older, and probably further along in their careers. Many are probably empty nesters too. Be dsciplined and lay aside $700-$1,000 for a bass if you can, and just tell your GAS to go to hell. You can do it. Even I have done for a few years at a time when I had to.:)

Dude, I went 15 years with one bass and one amp, and I didn't particularly like the bass (heavily modified 76 Precision). But it's what I had and I couldn't afford anything else so I made the best of it. Family comes first always.

lol I hear ya doc. I'm telling my self be patient, and if its meant to be when I have the scratch it will be around. If not there are other fish in the sea. Its a custom Conklin made for Butch Ramesy its not in the best shape these days but it its what it is.

oh no doubt. My fam is always 1st before the bass. I am speaking only of my personal entertainment and gear budget. ie tv's cds dvds, etc. None of this money would be taken from bills or food and so forth. Just "putting it on paper" Trying to see if I would really want to lay down that kind of coin. I still get down on my lil p basses I have. Just nice to have what ya want sometimes ya know. Like my bass teacher is a killer and so not a gas addict. But to each there own.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's a bummer not to have the gear you truly want or the immediate means to get it. Well, you had it all once and you'll have it again. Just takes time, patience, and discipline, and it sounds like you've got all 3. And in the meantime, Precisions rock! Not to worry!

That's a great post for some perpsective!:) It's been said a million times, but GAS can often makes us unhappy with gear that actually like if were just objective about it. I know it's a challenge for me to just close my ears to outside opinion, and ask myself what I really like.:bassist:

That is a cool bass, but you are right, there are always
deals around. Just be patient.:cool:
