30” but requires medium scale strings on (as I have it strung) the B0 and E1 due to the big vibrato tailpiece. If Dunlops sold singles, I’d get a medium scale 5-string set and add a .030 for the B2, but alas. You don’t mention the scale length of your bass, but Dunlop makes Super Brights in both short and medium scale - not sure about 6- string but they make 5. I have them on my Serek.
I don’t know if this helps but I substituted a Labella RX Nickel for a medium-scale Dunlop SB D-string and it fit right in sonically. …not sure about .030 singles though. FWIW, you can call Dunlop strings (707-745-2722, ask for the bass string guy), get e real person who can help you directly. I was shocked, actually. Now whether or not they can sell you a single string or whatever, I’ve no idea. Still, just like Jason, they seem to be in the customer service business, unlike some other string companies who will remain nameless here.Jason from Fret Nation helped me put together the set of D’Addario singles that I currently use![]()
Rounds are usually ok but flats get stretched and often break when wrapped around the post. What precisely are the risks of having the full diameter of a big string around a tuning post? Breakage was mentioned, as was the inelegant look of it. Anything else?
I have gotten away with the full diameter of a .130 wrapping part way around a big Squier tuning post, but haven’t tried more than that.
I ask about the risks because I would like to just slap a Dunlop nickel roundwound six-string set on my Eastwood Sidejack Bass VI (tuned B0–B2), but that would mean at least one full wrap of the full diameter on a smaller tuning post (it does at least have bass tuning machines, but the smaller closed gear kind with Y-keys rather than the big honking open gear elephant ears), and I suspect that’s asking for trouble. I currently use a combination of D’Addario singles (medium scale .130 and .100; long scale .075, .055, .042, .032), and they do the job without breaking the bank, but Dunlops just sound so angry
