Middle-aged hobby musician from Southe-East Michigan here. I've been coming here for years to find answers to luthier and pedagogy questions. I just got around to registering an account. I may need a couple pointers with my Wishbass refinish.
Musically-speaking, I played flute in junior high band, so I can read music - barely. Then I played bass (a Peavey Patriot) for one summer in a groove-thrash garage band when I was sixteen. I had no idea what I was doing, but it worked out great. I just mimicked the guitar players hand position and played whatever sounded good to me in time with the drummer. Ten seconds into it and the drummer got a huge grin on his face and we were locked in. I ended up using the bootsy collins "funk box" (in a less funky manner) without knowing.
I went on to teach myself piano. I played professionally for one summer after I got out of the army. I got to play original neo-classical music as the lobby pianist before shows at the Macomb Center for Performing Arts. Then I quit piano. I find it too sterile, and I feel I can get a more organic sound out of guitar or bass (especially fretless). I would love to learn the upright bass one day.
I just learned "My Name is Human" by Highly Suspect, on bass. I'm working on "A Visit From the Dead" by King Diamond, on guitar; and I'm trying to learn the Purdie shuffle on a cheap drum kit. Maybe I'll find a band one day.
