Longtime lurker...

Hey great forum, glad to have joined. I've been a composer for TV and film music for 25 years. Though primarily a guitarist and DAW pilot, I played quite a bit of bass on recordings, and am recently quite in love with the instrument, exploring more techniques and gear as opposed to massive editing of quick and dirty DI takes. I was on a quest for a Pbass, and visited here frequently for a few months. Then, while on the road 6 weeks ago, I randomly met Talkbass user and supporter Engle. He helped me get current on some of the newer bass gear. I heard the Mesa Subway 800 through a Markbass MB58r 102 Pure and can't get the sound out of my head. I've a bad back from my roadie years, so the light weight of those is critical to me.When you see me posting and replying, please advise me that I can get that weight, sound, and performance without coughing up $1700!

Do you insist on the power (and related weight), as well as the sound?

I mean, you might find a modeling amp (head + cabinet or a combo) that you could well settle for. (I didn't check the availability of this suggestion.)

Markbass has a 102 pure Combo for $1199 [can get 10-15% off] also can save a couple hundred with Mesa D 350 Head

Thanks for the reply! I'll fire up a thread elsewhere with my current gear options and other details. I do I have some preamps and modeling devices that could serve well. Boss Gt1kCore might work, for instance, but it is central to my guitar pedalboard. I primarily want the power and weight features. If I could find a 350 watt power amp to match with a neo cab I'd be set, I suppose. 25 lbs is about my max for any individual component of the rig. I won't be playing arenas and have PA should I play outdoors.

Talking about PA: you could decide to connect your bass to your PA by way of a DI-Box. I'm thinking of the device I have, but you'll have your own preferences. Besides, I'm zooming in on your weight concerns to the extent of neglecting the sound that you have in mind. - But this should merely help you in defining the field of your possibilities (rather than "options"). Others will be better aware than I of achieving that sound.

I could be happy with a bass preamp DI, and have done that on many recordings, but haven't been pleased with a full range PA cab as my only rig for practice and band rehearsal. There was something quite magical about that Subway and Markbass cab that sparked me up. Maybe I could be happy with a bass preamp pedal and a diy class D power amp, then smaller Neo cab, later supplemented with PA?
