Hey all,
It was my attempt at creating an VERY close "copy" of the "heavy-relic" '69 p-bass issued by FCS. Again, mine's (NOT FOR SALE) strictly a "functional art" project. I've got no more qualms about creating a copy out of MY Fender than they have about creating "reliced re-issues", so I'd like to avoid the ethical issues discussion.

But from an artistic point of view, I will say that I got da#% close to the '69 p-bass; except mines a PJ, which is the best of both worlds (sound wise) to me.

Does relicing improve the sound somewhat?

I went to Steve's the other day, looked at some of their reliced CS guitars (no reliced basses) and it was a bit humourous to feel the distressed finish being covered smooth by lacquer (especially the teles). Couldn't tell if it was poly or nitro, but I guess I just can't wrap my head around it.

I guess to each their own. If it plays great, then cool. I mean, there are even the heavily used basses like Bobby Vega's Jazz or Herbie Flowers' Jazz - they look a bit too dingy for my tastes. I think having a pristine '69 P-bass would have been quite a treat.

I don't know how FCS does it but on mine: all the places where red, undercoat of white or wood show we're mapped out in advance. After the yellowing lacquer coats we're complete the wood sections were re-sanded so they're bare and will continue to change over time. Not re-coated w/lacquer.

Also, notice the spot near the pups; that happened naturally, just from moving the anchor point of my thumb. Sort of dug into the finish. It's a rock bass for sure, and it's becoming characteristic of my playing all the time.
That could never happen with a nitro finish. Well...maybe after a couple hundred YEARS!

I find myself torn between making it a complete period peace by relicing the hardware and leaving it with the black hardware which I like even more now that it's on there.

I think this thing is a rescue puppy!
I'm sure a lot of you guys have basses that of been giged and plain beat to ****. You put nice hardware on them and they plays even better. This is the same deal. Examp...I got a solid black Badass IV bridge I'd like to put on it; I just know it'll feel and sound better than the vintage bridge.

Should've been presented as a pole...

I hope everybody had a fantastic Christmas celebration.

My relic bass sure has generated a lot of interest and I'd like to thank everybody for sharing there comments on this thread. Good, big fun and nobody got hurt!

After several requests, on this thread and in PM's to make them available for sale, I've decided to start a new "lighter relic" Fender P-Bass. When I'm finished I will post it and make it available for sale. After that I'll just take it from there.
If people like that one and want more I'll make more. It's really that simple. Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement and support.

I tip my cap. A lot of people post their creations here and aren't able to accept opinions and keep things constructive. I wish more folks were open minded and comfortable with themselves and their basses.
