Started the polishing process. Here's the before, and the 1st of many many coats.
(Please try to ignore the worm hole)

Wow, that's really starting to pop the walnut, nice!!

Yeah, that was my first test patch, and I was taken by surprise. Wasn't expecting it to look that good yet.

I now have a number of coats on the front and back, and the figuring is getting deeper.

Here's the steps that I take. I'll follow this for the next 5 to 10 coats.
1) I'll put a couple drops of olive oil on a piece of cheesecloth, and wipe on a very thin film onto the surface I am about to work on.
2) I'll put a few drops of my shellac on my pad and start rubbing it in.
3) I'll continue to put drops of shellac on my pad until I have a section finished.
4) For the first few coats, I gain an understanding of the solution I have prepared. In this case, I'm going to dilute it a little more with denature alcohol. I'm seeing some streaking in the finish, and I think it's because there's just a little too much shellac in the solution
5) My pore filling wasn't the greatest in some areas, so for the first 5 to 10 coats, I'll knock down the surface with some 1000 grit polishing paper. I'll work my way up in grits in the polishing paper as I go.

I need to go send a package, so I'll be back later

Update,

I have 12 coats down. It's shiny!
If I were to show a different angle it would show what a poor job I did on filling the pores, so I'm not going to do that. And I don't feel like sanding it to get a great base down, so it's off to a Bass Assembly Day sometime this weekend.

Also have the neck pretty much set to go. The pic may be a bit difficult to understand at first, but it's the FB on teh left. The back of the neck is as polished as the FB.

Thanks for looking.

Update:

Didnt like the finish. It got kinda streaky.

So I stripped off the carp and started over. Got a nice finish to take in a number of different directions. The neck is quite nice too.

And the color objective

Looks like you had a bit of shrink back, that happens when you build up a bunch of finish and the top layer cures and the bottom layers dry slower. Its usually easily fixed by a quick level sanding with 2000 grit and a repolish. It happens all the time with the heavy flake jobs I do

I thought this was going to be a NBD, but the finish line aludes me.

I have it all assembled, strung up, etc., etc.

When I go to set the intonation at the bridge, 2 of the 5 screws for the bridge are stripped. More Hipshot QA issues. I'll be calling as soon as I post (Yeah I know Hipshot is pretty good about customer service, but I shouldn't have issues with one out of every 20 or so products I buy from them)

From the little I was able to play, this isnt too bad. Need to break in the Chromes yet

Cheers

Thanks all for your compliments.

Took her on her maiden voyage last night. Got 4 full sets in and here are my initial impressions
1) I LUV the neck! Fingerboard has a little high spot on the D string around the 3rd fret. I'll tend to that soon. It's fast, smooth and slim.
2) I DON'T Luv it's sound. It's got low end for days, but no articulation in the mid and upper frequencies. I prefer a little bit of a mid-range punch, and there is very little mid-range to it's current sound. Even in it's current location, it somewhat resembles a mudbucker in tonal characteristics. It also has an uncanny harmonic feedback. I noticed it many times. When the keyboards hit some lower register notes, and I was playing the same note, my bass would start harmonically feeding back.

I can't remember what I based the positioning of the pup. I'll be experimenting with this in the days to come.
