Looking at a 77 p bass

It's a cool lookin bass, but too pricey for non original pickups IMO. Now maybe if it was like $8-900, that'd be a better deal.
I'm no Fender expert, but that price seems a little on the high side for something that non-original.
Also, since the pups are active and there is no routing for a box, I'm assuming the battery is under the pickguard, which makes changing it a pain.
It's a cool looking P, but I'm not so sure I would drop my $1200 on it.

Seller is "asking for $1200." I bet he'd take less.
If only the original parts came with it. I like the BA and it has worked very well on a couple of my P basses, but I'm sure I'd want at least a vintage replacement pickup instead of the active EMGs. If you got him down to around $850 and then found a used set of passive P bass pickups more appropriate to this vintage, that might be a decent deal.

Maybe? If it was a pre-CBS for $1200 I'm pretty sure the seller would've already sold it...you can't get a pre-CBS neck with no hardware for less than $1200.
Given the fact that it is not original, it is probably a little over priced. I recently sold a 77 that was original for $1,500.
The pickup cover looks almost like an old Gibson one to me... because one side is straight and the other curved, like the type you see on Thunderbirds.
The bridge cover in the case is meant for an older style P-bass/Telecaster Bass.

Price is a bit high for it not being in collectors' condition. And a good number of late-70's Fender instruments are not too hot. I've owned a 77 P and a 77 or 78 Strat that I have no regrets about selling. For half that price you can pick up a slammin MIJ P from the 80's, if it's just a player's bass you're looking for.
I think that bass is just about perfect. I'd drop $1200 if it played well and no issues with the neck.
I bought a 78 last year that had after market p-ups and bridge, but it came with the originals and original bridge and pickup covers. Also came with the original case. Same finish, but with a maple board. Mine might have a tad more wear. I got it for an even 1K. But I also played before I paid, and the weight and tone and finish are exactly what I wanted to have in a p-bass. It was also bought from the original owner that I knew personally. I couldn't find anything newer that met my tastes.
