$950?! You don’t need to spend anywhere near that. I just sold a CIC CV70s p for $300 on marketplace, and it was listed for a while before going even at that price.

The Fender Player P in Ocean Turquoise, I’ve had one and played a bunch of them and they were all really damn good P Basses, one of the few basses I swapped pickups in and then swapped back to stock. Not that I’m pick up swapping inclined to begin with, but I put a model P in it and thought the stock pickup was wayyy better so I swapped back.
Plus you can’t get a much cooler colorway than Ocean Turquoise, Tort and Maple

Nobody ever seems to mention Slick Guitars, designed by guitarist Earl Slick. I have no personal experience or knowledge of these Precision-style basses, but it appears that they are priced below $300. All but one look like they come with a slightly "relic'd" finish, which is not to my taste, but some folks dig it.

All purchased used and assembled with a similar goal, to have something I wouldn’t worry about. Now the neck was the bargain of the century and I already had a bridge but this was assembled for about $600.

Builds are fun, so this is the route I would go, personally. Regardless, as should be pretty obvious from this thread, there a plethora of options for cheap/beater P basses out there, so have at it!

I was in a similar position at one time and I purchased a Yamaha B-300 bass. It played great and sounded at least as good as a Fender P bass. It served me well for a couple of years.

Ive played tons of old, new fender P basses. Picked up a CV 70 with the fat 70's neck. PU ok but I installed a Duncan II . I shall never want for another P bass. Perfect and real cheap.

For under $950 (are you $50 short and can’t afford a grand?) you can probably find a used AmStd or other US P, although you’ll be beating the bushes a bit. These days everyone thinks that if their bass is more than 5 years old it’s rare and jacks up the price. You can certainly get a used MIM for much less than $950.

If it doesn't have to say Fender on the headstock, you have exactly 1,000,003 other choices Don't order online, go to local stores and scour Craigslist and check Reverb for local pickup listings. I just searched Reverb for local pickups in my area and found two MIM Standards and a Player Plus, priced between $585 and $745.

Once you get into off-brand Asian brands…SX, Harley Benton, Rogue, Hondo, etc. it’s a crapshoot but you can certainly get them cheap, especially used.

Thing is, we’re just gonna toss out names of our favorites, what works for us. Variables in QC and personal preferences make this impossible to answer what YOU will like.

So I say go to your local store(s) and play whatever’s in stock. You’ll find one that speaks to you, cause there’s plenty out there. Good luck!

I bought a 4 year old mim for $350 this year. After I set it up played and sounded great. Should be able to buy a usa one for 950 or less.

I've giggled a ton with my $140-ish Squier Debut Series P via Amazon. Put your strings of preference on it and you have exactly what you are asking for.

It's a dandy P bass.

I picked up a used Squier CV last summer for $200 and it’s pretty darn good for the money.
