Looking for a good 'always on' OD

Hi All,

Looking for a bit of help. I would love to get a bass tone like the one in this video.

I have the same amp as this guy (Woogie - Tube Pre/SS Power Amp - hand built by Frank in Adelaide) but not the Ricky.

I would like an OD that would hit this tone at about it's top limit and roll off to a lower gain setting with good results. A solid EQ section would be a bonus.

I have very little experience with OD and would appreciate any suggestions based on your experience.

Unfortunately, there are only about 200 different overdrive pedals that can do that ;) Some you'll love, some you'll hate...I've been digging the Tech 21 VT and a Greedtone overdrive clone pedal I just picked up. The VT has a lot of knobs and a lot of versatility, but it can be a chore to get it dialed in at first, whereas the Greedtone only has volume and drive and no tone knobs but it sounds really good at any setting and is butt simple to use. I guess everyone else will now list the other 198 ;)

+1 on the VT

Ok. Refine search?

Small footprint. EQ that sounds good with drive set to 0. Bypass and a boost switch?

VT Bass is a good place to start, especially if you're looking for something with EQ capabilities. Drive set to 0 would give you no sound. But it does clean up nicely at low-gain settings. I'm not sure about the tone in the vid though. That sounds more like Fulltone Bassdrive territory perhaps (although I've not owned one myself). I've personally been kicking myself regularly for not jumping on the last one that showed up here...

I'm currently awaiting the Darkglass Microtubes B7K preamp. While I own and like both the Sansamp BDDI and the VT, I was looking for something with a bit more EQ options. The B7K has both low and high mid-controls. I still use the Sansamp-stuff though...

I am really fond of my Custom OD built by Rick Holt of Frequency Central. Twin mini tube, 3 band eq based on a Marshall tonestack, and a little extra in the form of a dirt feature which is essentially a slight distortion. It also has a very useful blend control, and is what I had been lookign for for quite a long time. Also, it does not cut the bottom out of your tone...I play mostly 6 strings and the lows are present.

Rick can add and modify things to meet your needs. Mine cost about $400 shipped from England.

My always on overdrive is the fulltone Lcd overdrive, and I highly recommend it. I like the B3k better, but only slightly and it's price is much heftier. The ocd is amazingly versitile. The ocd has a kind of boost switch and sounds great with the drive at 0.
