I took a used MIM Fender Deluxe (Active) Jazz, and put modern sounding Nordstrand big blade pickups in it. Kept the stock preamp.

Maybe a 2 pickup Ibanez ATK? Has an active preamp and the bridge pickup has coil switching, so you should be able to get Jazz tones out of it pretty easy. I haven't handled one in a long time but I seem to remember they had skinny-ish necks as well. And they've been making them for ~25 years so there's plenty of used ones out there.

You have a point. There are many good bass manufacturers in Germany and Sandberg is one of the best (together with Marleaux).

- Squier and modify it (maybe Delanos + Noll electronic).
- Mexican JJ + same treatement as the Squier would get (which will lead to a more expensive bass...but it may still be doable)

Delanos sound great... they sound even better with a J-Retro Deluxe preamp! That combo + DR Hi-beams is my favorite.
