Looking for a recommendations for 23" scale 4 string bass between $500-$1000

Hello All,

Looking for a recommendations for 23" scale 4 string bass between $500-$1000.

I tried purchasing a Kala solid body before but was disappointed in the quality. Thank you!!!

I like GoldTone. They do both hollow and solid body 23" basses. Some models can take certain stainless steel strings too, if you prefer a more familiar feel.

I have a solid body fretless (although they only show the fretted version for some reason):

Which Kala did you not like? They make a nicer California series. They are ~$1500, but used ones pop up around $1000.

I haven’t put my hands on one yet, none in my area but I’ve seen a fair amount of good reviews for them.

If you don’t mind me asking, how is the intonation across the neck?
Can you dial it in across the whole neck well enough, or can you intonate only part of the neck well.
I had a mini P bass for a short while and no matter how much I tried I could not get good intonation across the whole neck.
Now my modded Bronco Bass, which is short scale I can have the intonation on the neck pretty damn good.
Most of it is spot on and everything else is no more than 1 or 2 cents sharp/flat.

Have not played one, so cannot say. I am sure it is a significantly different instrument than the cheaper solid bodies (can tell that from specs and looking at them).

what brand was the mini P bass?

It was a Squier 28.5” scale. I could get the intonation dialed well enough but not good enough for my ears.
It was a fun bass built well enough, primary reason I got rid of it was there wasn’t enough space between the treble horn of the body and the neck to fit my hand in between to reach notes above the 12th fret.

There are lots of reviews on YouTube for the flight basses too.
FWIW
I did a lot of searching into micro basses a while back and it looks like price wise micro basses are either in the $100-600 range or boutique micro basses starting around the $2000 and up.
