Currently I have a Peavey T-max with a Sansamp RBI. The overdrive sounds pretty nice, but a little bit like a chainsaw, so I'm looking for an (pre)amp with real tubes.
I use a Rickenbacker 4003 and I'm a big fan of the early sound of Geddy Lee.
I use the Aguilar GS212 as cab. Which one would you go with?

- Traynor YBA200
- a used Ampeg V4BH
- Demeter Pre-amp (i'd keep the T-Max as poweramp)
- Ampeg SVP Pro Pre-amp (i'd keep the T-Max as poweramp)
- Other (define..)

I use the SVP pre-amp with a Crown power amp, and I'm very happy with that. I had a tube SVT before that and like what I have now as well. I have a bassist I know who has the Traynor and is happy with it, but says it puts out tons of bottom (so ya gotta watch it). The one I use the most now however is my Ashdown ABM 500 EVO II ... very strong SVT tube vibe with it!

the V4bh is the updated version. it's got a balanced line out and a presence switch (boosts high frequencies), and a 8 or 4 ohm selector switch.

V4B is the older model (read 70's) that doesn't have those 3 things. They supposedly have a better tone (vintage) and can be gotten for cheaper cause they are all used.

What's wrong with the T-max front end? I'ts got a tube and sounds great to me. In fact, I bought a second one as a backup when my first T-Max was visiting the Peavey Repair facility.

I also have a really beat-up early '70's V4B, sounds good, but is too unreliable for every weekend use. I can get the same sound out of the T-Max, tubey sounding as I want to be.

Nothing really, but my Ric really doesn't sound good through it. My Stingray did sound very nice through it though. But the Ric is my main bass so I'm looking for a better match now.

I think it will go between the Traynor YBA200 and the Ampeg V4BH.
What's the main differences between these two?
Anyone who tried them both?

How true. There are really 3 basic sounds in bass amps. 1) all SS, 2) tube - pre SS-power and 3) all tube. To be honest, I like all 3, if I had my way, I'd have amp that did all 3. I tried the POD-Pro thing. It sounds like a recording of a the bass amp it is modeling but just doesn't feel right. Kinda like kissing you sister.:smug: Remember, I'm from WV:eek:

really? hmmm... Well, i have tried the POD and feel it pales in comparison to kissing your sister.

For the sound I like out of my YBA200, I cut the mids and treble. I use two dif bass setups, 1) Fender jazz w/flats and Barts, and 2) a more aggressive swamp ash active jazz w/D'Addario nickels (I think) and SD (Vintage) Basslines.

The YBA brings them both to life. However, my dials are positioned unlike other YBA owner's settings (as posted in these forums), and I don't know why. But I know what I like.

Point is, if you want mids and treble, it is in there. Can't you try one out? Or lacking that, maybe you could buy one with a "satisfaction guarantee" so if it didn't work out for you, it goes back.
