looking for an acoustic

I'm looking to purchase an acoustic bass in the next few weeks here, but have no experience at all with acoustic basses. I'm looking for a 4 string acoustic / electric combo with a modest budget of $400 or so... not looking for a boutique bass or anything spectacular, just a solid workhorse kind of bass that can handle a beating.

Any suggestions?

Michael Kelly's seem to have a good rep- a used one should be w/in your budget. That said, what are you wanting it for? There's a HUGE difference of opinion/experience in making one heard over accompanying instruments. I am in the *I can't hear the danged thing over that fly buzzing* camp, but YMMV. I do own one, an older, defretted Washburn AB-20.

Mainly looking for one for simple home practice and travel jams with my sister in Cleveland. A little soloing here and there. Not for gigging.

I'm planning on playing this bass very little as compared to my electric. I may find myself at the local pawn shop trying some out for fun.
