Poly won't wear as quickly or as easily.

the only benefit that i know of is that poly is more durable than nitro. for a good poly finish, the trick is applying it very thin

The nitro vs. poly thing largely boils down to aesthetics. There is no tone difference worth noting. Personally, I cannot stand the way poly looks and feels. Might as well dip the bass in plastic.

But it is definitely more durable.
