Looking for good 5 string for various sessions.

Carvin PB5. Every once in a while you can find em for 7 bills... worth considerably more if you do. Theyre like a PBass on steroids... great tone. I have a passive one that's considerably beefier than my active PBass delux was.

I tried to PM you but I can't find where to start a conversation with you on your info page which is strange. Anyway, I'm about to list a Lakland 55-01 with a Bart NTMB preamp because I have two.

Try a whole bunch of 5 string basses in your local stores, but before you buy anything I would recommend that you also try 5 string basses with different tunings e.g. ADGCF, BEADG, DGCFA# and EADGC. I find that latter two (higher) tunings to be much more useful, and don't need a 35" or fanned fret design to sound good.

If you can find one, look for a fender mb5. There's mine. In my avatars pic. They're great modern sounding instruments and I feel mine nicely does what my pbass doesn't. Granted i haven't used it to record much.

Went today and played basses at Ash and GC. Man a lot of poorly setup instruments. To much clanking. But I did like a $1200 Ibanez, as usual I like the more expensive stuff. It was an SR1805E 5 string, had Nordstrand Big Single Pickups. Sounded and played great. The other thing I realized was I like the active/passive switch. I really like that. I played a bunch of Fender Jazz', Stingray, Carvin, and some others. I'm trying selling a vintage SVT, once that moves I'm getting a new base and studio amp.

I don't know if you got to try this as some of my GC stores near me hasn't even seen these yet, but they just came out. Ibanez SR655 and the SR755. These have the Nordstrand P/J pickups and an EQ bypass switch. Price is $749 brand new.

Sterling by musicman Ray 35 is basically the model between a sbmm sub and a mia Ebmm stingray 5. It's pushes you budget at about $800 new but I'm sure you could find one discounted because of ding or something. It's pretty good bass for the money. I don't know if you can see my picture well enough but I play a made in California ebmm stingray 5 and I think the sterling by musicman Ray 35 is a killer bass considering it's about half the price and they didn't cut a ton of corners.

I've always struggled to record those type of basses, not sure why or what I'm doing wrong. They always record to hollow for me.

James, try a Lakland passive 5 string Jazz bass. You can get them used for around $700 if you get lucky. For a little more modern sound, just add an outboard pre. I use the Sadowksy pre. It records like a dream this way. Lots of flexibility in the studio with this setup.

Thanks AC. I've been checking out some on youtube and like this one, do you think this would be something that would do the trick, it has both active and passive setting:

Also I already have a Nash P (57) which is great but I'm looking for something a bit more hi fi and modern.

I tried the 55-94 and its not going to compete (IMO) with the combo I suggested.

The sadowksy pre is what makes the tone hi fi and modern. That is, if you like the hi fi J tone (Marcus Miller style).

There are tons of other outboard pres, but I was in your shoes a few years back and this combo destroyed everything else, especially for the price ( I spent under $700 for the bass and $100 for the Pre.)

The one I was looking at was the AJ series. I actually just got the new A Designs active DI with EQ, no one in the world has one yet, I am beta testing it for Peter. I think it releases next month. I have the mono unit with 2 eqs.
