Looking for Headphones

Invest in a decent set and you'll be good for a long time. I like the AKG K240s, great value. I prefer studio / recording headphones over consumer level gear - the consumer level stuff all have "tweaked" response curves to "make things sound better" (on some engineer's idea of "better"). Studio cans have flat response, you want to hear the actual sounds you're making, not some "flavored" version.
I have the akg k240's as well. great headphone, good low end response, and a great price tag. Been around forever and you can nab them for under $70. No need to go crazy on cans as a beginner imho. Buy the k240s and put the extra cash towards something else (like a nice compressor pedal).
well, past a certain point on the quality scale, there really is no one "best", it comes down to personal preferences. And unless you're planning on doing professional studio recording, there's really no reason to get anything more expensive than the AKGs.

There are other good choices available at similar prices, other posters will probably chime in, but there's a reason the AKGs are popular here. I got mine after reading up and asking some questions on here just like you, so I'm just passing it on.

Even with no budget limit, there are some considerations to take into account.
If there is distracting noise where you'll be using them, you'd probably want to avoid open back headphones which let in ambient sounds. You may even want ANC - active noise cancellation - to block outside noise.
Open backs also allow your music to bleed out so anyone near you would probably hear your music.
On-ear / Over-ear (a.k.a. circumaural)
I find on-ears to be uncomfortable and they don't isolate you from ambient noise, like the dehumidifier near my music area! Others don't like over-ears because they can make your ears hot.
I've tried, and returned, maybe 6 sets of headphones in the last 2 months. I can't find any that don't have buzzing, distorted bass when connected to either of my mixers or either of my amp heads. Good luck!
