Looking to mic my 15 cab

Looking for some input. So I have an Ampeg SVT-CL into a 15e with an Eminence 15 4ohm that Eminence recommended to me for the cab. Here’s my Rig below. It sounds amazing. Punchy yet warm. All I’ve ever wanted in a rig honestly. However I’m not stoked with the DI. Using only the Pre on the CL it just doesn’t translate the awesomeness of this rig. So.....

Thought about an in-line DI between the head and cab but decided I’m going to Mic the cab. That way I’m truly capturing the tone to the PA.

Any suggestions on Mics? I’d like to keep the price 300 or under. Or a higher priced one used would be fine. I dig the hanger over the cab mics but I’m not sure what is avail for bass cabs with that style. I don’t want a huge mic that will stick way out if I can avoid it. We play some tight stages on occasion and I don’t wanna have to worry about stepping on it to much. Any additional tips on placement, EQing or anything else is most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help!

This topic seems to come up about once a month.

Here's a thread from earlier in the month. Good mike choices for my cabinet

For a compact, low cost mic that works well, I always recommend the Audix D4. But before spending the cash, just try whatever leftover dynamic you have to see how you like it. A spare Shure SM57 or SM58 will work fine for the evaluation. I do suggest avoiding kick drum mics as they tend to have quite a bit of backed in EQ.

Have fun.

AKG P2 is a budget mic for bass cabs that a lot of folks seem to like. I've never tried one, but it gets very good reviews from those who have. I use a Heil PR40 when I mic a cab. Bit over your budget, but I think the Heil PR30 isn't, and it's an excellent cab mic, too.

Just ordered an AKG P2. Can’t beat the price. I’ll start there and work my way up to pricier mics if I’m not happy with it. Updates after this weekends gigs!
Get a steel mic stand thread 3/8 to 5/8 adapter for it.

The cheesy plastic integral clip has the standard 5/8" internal threads, very easy to chew them up beyond use in one mistake. It has a steel insert with 3/8 female threads.

Adapter screws into the steel insert to give you a 5/8 female steel instead of cheese.

Otherwise, prepare to be fully satisfied. Stick it a half inch off the grill pointed straight at the cone section nearest the dust cap. Done.

Your next trick is to have a mic stand or cab grabber all set to beat the soundguy to the bass DI cable.

The least they can do is take a listen. So long as you aren't all mud they should have no problem making you sound like you.

You really need to try out a P2. The only thing budget about it is the mic clip that needs a 2 buck fix, and the price! It's pukka, a real deal full range cab mic for a hundred bucks. If only it wasn't a DI world these days they would be everywhere.

As you should. Bass needs a full range mic.
Why?

I and certainly thousands of have miked a bass cab with one of these ubiquitous 10p nails of live sound. Worked/s great. Are you telling all of us it didn’t sound ok and in fact our ears were lying to us and we should pay more attention to the frequency response chart?

Bass doesn’t need a full-spectrum mic. It needs something with a gentle HPF. Ta-da! Looks like the kind of thing you need to keep hamfisted FOH guys from turning the BG into a pipeline of mud.

FWIW, it has roughly the same curve as a Heil PR30 and I know I’ve see pros use those. They wrong too?

Personal note: Why are you stating something that is clearly effective, isn’t? What’s in it for you?

It works for you, carry on. I guess you can use a 58 for anything but I will keep suggesting a bass cab muc for bass cabs, P2 in particular because mine works so well.

Will this work? Thanks for that extra tip!
that's the one. You're welcome.

I have the AKG P2 and it sits in front of my SVT - It does exactly what you want it to do. Sounded great in front of my Fridge when I had it, sounds great in front of my 212AV. You likely will not need to work your way up higher, but as people mentioned, get the mic stand adapter. I removed the insert on mine, and the larger threads are plastic. Fortunately, my mic is permanently attached to a stand, so I don't have to worry about stripped threads. I just bring the entire mic and stand combination as a unit to the gig, and I ask them to plug into this. Never had a complaint from the sound guy and I often get "Wow, that mic sounds great" comments.

I did just that. Ordered the P2, the adapter and a small mic stand. I should be able to break it all down and put it in my road case. I have no doubt it will work great. And the price is nice as well. Thanks for the reassurance! I’ll have it all on Thurs and will gig it this weekend. So feedback is on the way!

Just an update on the P2. Finally got to use it last night. For reference I have a SVT-CL Head and a SVT 115e cab with an Eminence 4-ohm 15 they recommend for that cab.

I am blow away by the difference between the CL-DI and this mic. It was truly like an extension of my cab into the PA Speakers with the P2. Not to meantion the tone improvement in my IEMs. The P2 worked great. For 99 bucks I highly recommend it.

Reminds me of the time the sound guy had me cranked in the drummer's massive monitor so loud I couldn't hear my own cab at all and it sounded just like me. P2 FTW.
