usually when people mean 'grind' that means both some heft in low mids and aggressive crispy clanky heighs. stainless hex-core strings do have more of that baked in than nickel-plated, where the highs are subdued and they sound warmer and politer.

Sounds about right. My happy place is tapewounds or close to it (mellow but clear). Currently loving La Bella Super Polished, but I don't think that's his direction. On paper TIJR should be perfect to my ears, but they also cost a lot of paper (especially since you can't play rounds for 10 years like flats/tapes).

Yeah, he clarified that just before you did. That all makes sense.

I have very little experience with stainless steels. Personally, I find them to "clangy" for my tastes. Nickel-on-steel might be a good middle ground. That, or possibly Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats. I know their cobalt rounds are very bright and the FlexSteels are pretty darn close. (It's just a guess, but I suspect D'Addario trotted them out to compete with the EB Cobalts.)

For what it's worth, I did use a set of Fender Pure Nickels on my P/P Blacktop Jazz to keep the "thump", but ditch some of the tooth-chattering "clang", but that might be a tad too warm for what the OP is looking for. 'Tis part of the mystery of exploration, ja?
