Losing Interest

View attachment 3748767 Since everything is closed, I get to take care of my 3 year old granddaughter (we actually pulled her out of day care a few days before the world shut down). I'd forgotten how much work a little kid can be. I'm having a blast, but I don't have a moment of time to myself. I like it!
You lucky dawg you. Our daughter, her husband, and the 2 year old were suppose to be here for the next few weeks. Unfortunately, they live in France and, well ...you know.

I really sympathize. Since my last gig a week ago, I've only picked up the bass for 2-3 hours total. Need to get my ass back into gear, I've been so stressed by all the craziness that I have to do something just for my mental health.

I have a couple of transcriptions that I need to start, plenty of scale and arpeggio exercises to work on and maybe I'll start working on my bowing again. Opportunity knocks!!

So due the the Covid -19 situation, all our gigs have been cancelled, particularly at a busy time here in FL for festivals etc.
I understand this is a necessary move and I am not the only one feeling the effects.
My point is that I have happily spent many hours practicing material and rehearsing with the band, and always looked forward to working on new songs.
I know it should be an opportunity to practice more as there is much empty time now that clubs, bars, restaurants and gathering are closed, but I am finding difficult to get motivated as the targets have been removed.
Wondering if others feel the same way or I am just nuts!

set your goals on paper, as far as practicing technical things.

For creative impetus, do some recordings!
Review your favorite pedal, do a bass cover, kick off your singing career!

I tend to lack motivation going over the same old stuff that I know unless there is a gig on the horizon. I keep them sharp for rehearsals, but with those shut down for a week or two, I have no desire to grind through stuff I know.

But I do try to work on something new when I get into these ruts. Really work on a technique issue, or get into a new genre or learn some new songs that I should have in my repository, maybe work on my reading skills - etc. Thigs that I really don't have the time to do properly when I'm grinding on my current playlist.

And sometimes, I'll just toss on a Pandora channel or two and have fun grooving - this really puts the joy back into music

Yeah, our shows are all cancelled for at least the next month. (Bars, restaurants, and music venues closed in this area.)

I can relate, as far getting bored or feeling stale. Best remedy I've come up with is to woodshed something new and challenging. I always feel the spark of excitement when I make progress on something I hadn't been able to pull off. For me, it's currently two things: singing falsetto (!), and taking a line outside in jazz solo style. Scott Devine had a freebie vid that got me going on that; he described a melodic line over a dom 7th chord that included #11 and b13 notes. Been playing with that kind of stuff. Superposing "out" triads makes some nice colors. Erm, still working on _sticking the landing_ when I come back "inside"... but it's keeping me going.

I'm pretty much the same. My 5yo has no school now, so been doing everything with him, and haven't touched an instrument since this all went big. No complaints.

I've gone from a fully booked diary to being completely unemployed for the next two months at least. I knew it was coming but when the cancelations are coming in thick and fast and now with no source of income I don't really know what happens next.

Take a day or two just process things, that's what I've found myself doing. It's a pretty surreal series of events we've all found ourselves in and I imagine not many people have had time to work out what happens next because most of us don't even know. Take a day or two to just come to terms with stuff and then take it from there. I've got unlimited practise time on my hands so I know I will utilise that and be better on the other side of this but the past day or two has been a lot of bummed out trying to work out a few things in my head. It's okay to take time to digest a major global crisis.

We had all March, April and probably May gigs canceled or re-scheduled. A festival in June is already canceled.
Our gig tonight is cancelled @ The Warehouse in L.I. We were headlining.
Our yearly Dead of Winter show, March 21st @ Vail-Leavitt Music Hall in Riverhead L.I. has been canceled.
Our Watkins Glen show @ The Patchogue Theatre on Apr 19th has been re-scheduled to Nov 14th - but we were already booked somewhere else on Nov 14th, so now I have to move that date around, to who knows when!
So to keep busy, I always wanted to learn how to play the ukulele. Gonna give it a whirl....

Please stay safe!

Go outside and suck in some of that Florida sunshine we don’t have up in Tennessee.

Then maybe a book. I’ve got several under my futon awaiting my attention.

Otherwise, I’m cycling through sheet music or listening to whatever comes up on my iTunes playlist. I feel naked in idle time without my bass in my hands, and when the rain finally stops here, I need to get outside and give it a rest.

yesterday I spent time with my keys setup, tweaking setups and patches, making sure I'm getting the most appropriate sounds for the songs I play. I never have a chance to do that, so it's a blessing in disguise. Hope to work on some new bass material tonight. just to keep the creative juices flowing.

For anybody ever wishing for more free time to themselves... THIS IS THAT TIME!

You're not alone. There's a lot of stress, fear, and uncertainty in the world at this time. It's in the air, we're all feeling it, even if we're able to manage our own stress responses to some degree.

It's taking its toll on all of us in one way or another.

We will get through it. We will get back to normal at some point. Connect with friends, with family, find things you're grateful for, do something helpful for your neighbors, your community. Take advantage of slowing down with greater intention, something we all could do more of. Find the things that soothe you and do more of that!

Gigs wise, this feels like the Disco era when live bands were replaced with DJ's, which lasted a long time before live bands were hired again. Certainly changes are going to result from this, but this, too, shall pass!!!

This REALLY took the wind out our band's sails. No practice or gigs until mid-summer now for the cover band.

That said, I'm playing a lot of guitar now and working on composing originals. I'm also working on my 2-hand tapping. Basically, doing the things that I don't normally do when most of my time was spent learning and rehearsing covers.

All in all, I actually much more creative now than I was 2 weeks ago.

My concern after hearing our band is on hiatus until further notice is that we might lose our edge. Between the band and other (now dormant) projects I played at least every weekend, and usually a few more nights every month. I have to be self disciplined to practice daily, which I haven’t done in years.

I have no loss in interest whatsoever and see this as an oportunity to finish off writing and recording a number of ongoing projects and to work on my playing more.
I have lost interest however in hearing non-news on this Covid-19 thing.
