Losing Interest

Take your time, it’s not going to be quick to change your routine. Just because you don’t feel like doing it now, doesn’t mean you won’t in a few days once you find your new routine. Overall, just allow yourself to feel weird and uncomfortable and try to find what works best for you one change at a time.

I'm hoping and praying that we can start getting back to normal toward the end of May or first of June. In the meantime, keep calm and wash your hands. ;)
I'm sorry to have to say this Cliff, but May-June could be the epicenter of a crisis if the infection "curve" isn't effective, if it Is, this won't be over until there's no more virus transmission from anywhere, or a vaccine (due to it's very high contagiousness due to the "corona" of spikes on the virus itself), 12 to 18 months out. The state of the economy will have as much to do with small business surviving and conservatives are about to cooperate in a recovery act so we aren't all you-know-what-ed.

Have you seen the HBO show Avenue5 with Hugh Lorry as the fake space cruise ship captain? They're stranded on a 3 year journey back to Earth but on the season finale they made a mistake and now it's 8 years. Kinda prophetic.

So due the the Covid -19 situation, all our gigs have been cancelled, particularly at a busy time here in FL for festivals etc.
I understand this is a necessary move and I am not the only one feeling the effects.
My point is that I have happily spent many hours practicing material and rehearsing with the band, and always looked forward to working on new songs.
I know it should be an opportunity to practice more as there is much empty time now that clubs, bars, restaurants and gathering are closed, but I am finding difficult to get motivated as the targets have been removed.
Wondering if others feel the same way or I am just nuts!
Not having gigs to look forward to definitely sucks. I feel you on that. I work in healthcare though so I’ve actually been working overtime lately. Trying to stay positive and turn this into an opportunity to save some money for various things like gear, mixing and mastering, music videos and so on. Doubt I’ll get a “stimulus” check because I’m still working but if I do that would definitely put a nice dent in it.

All my gigs have been cancelled through mid-May, and not sure even then.

However, I bought a new(used) toy and have been playing it a good bit at home, a Beatle-bass knock-off, and I have jumped on the elliptical machine for five days in a row. All the "weakness" and soreness are now pretty much gone, and I plan to continue. My wife (who does not work) puts in 60 minutes non-stop, five days a week. I don't see me catching up to her.

Picked up guitar myself. Having a blast learning to play and appreciating how it informs my bass playing. I'm also going to start writing some basic tunes. And I'm going try singing outside the shower. New challenges make the music fresh again. And hope I get a couple of more weeks of work before I get laid off.

I'm going to use the time to brush up on things I've wanted to improve but haven't gotten around to. I've always wanted to get good at sight reading and transcription. It just somehow seemed like I never had enough time. Now I've got time for it, so that's what I'll be doing.

Don't loose interest in your heart. Keep rehearsaling, corona will be destroyed soon.

We're probably off for a while.
Aside from going over some stuff to keep limber, I'm going to work on my slap technique, and practice more on my upright.

Unless the BL shoots us a text to work on something I'll just review a few of the songs we don't play much. I hope he doesn't send anything because I'll work on it and by the time we get together he will have forgotten he wanted to do it and move onto something else.
I know he'll wait until another gig comes open before we practice.

In all likelihood, I'm going to be locked in at work very soon... I've already brought a bugout bag and a bass into the office just in case that happens.

It's different for everyone, for sure. Taking a break for a while is fine, woodshedding is also fine. I work from home fridays. I used to rock out with my SVT & 810 on fridays when kids were at school and wife at work. tomorrow will be different. Everyone will adapt & reassess.

When I'm in a rut/losing interest, I do one of three things:

1. Take a break for a while, and you'll feel when you want to play again.

b. 'shed like crazy on a new technique, or music style.

3,c. Learn another instrument, at least the basics. I've acquired keyboards and a guitar this way, which are both useful to have around the skillset, and I recently got a drum set. This is my favorite musical thing since starting bass, and is inspiring many ideas. ;).

Note- I am broke, and have acquired these things on a small budget, over time. Another way to keep the musical interest going is waiting until you can use it.
Ymmv and whatnot.

When I have the time, I usually play along with whatever songs I want to. Mostly I'll play 20-25 songs that I haven't played while 'bandified'; songs I have never played but know from years of listening to them. No song is ever standard 440, but it takes about 30 seconds to retune. No big deal.

Other times I may listen to songs I've already learned in a band setting to see if there's anything I'm missing.
