Lost in Austin

On a more serious note, though, I'm hearing that there's good nightlife in Austin. I'm getting some vacation time in a couple of weeks before being more or less indisposed until November. Would this be a good place to spend a few days, study in the day in a cafe or something, and spend the nights burning off some energy?

It seems like live music thrives in Austin, which is great for me, I haven't been able to participate in live music for quite a while. There's a scene in Fredericton, I've just been quite busy with work.

Like Jimmy, I haven't been downtown at night in a long time. Old and domesticated. It used to be every bar, every night of the week, there would be a band. I'm guessing that's not the case anymore. Still, I think Austin has a good nightlife. Whether it's worth a trip from NB, I don't know. The weather is great this time of year.

If you make a trip to Austin, throw in a side trip to San Antonio as well. The river walk is worth the 1.5 hr ride. There are multiple wineries an hour or so west of town. Just head out 290.

It seems like live music thrives in Austin, which is great for me, I haven't been able to participate in live music for quite a while. There's a scene in Fredericton, I've just been quite busy with work.

Every night there are hundreds of artists playing at any number places around town. Much of it occurs in the downtown area, which is somewhat subdivided. West 6th is yuppie central. Dirty 6th is college kids, dance clubs (with some bands thrown in), and 10s of thousands of people packed into the street just hanging out. East 6th is hipster/indie rock. Rainey Street is slowly getting torn down and replaced with condos, but there are still some live music venues. It's a slightly cooler version of West 6th. Red River is the heart of live music with Mohawk, Cheer Up Charlies, Stubbs, Barracuda, Sidewinder, Beerland, and more filling in a couple blocks.

If you don't want to get into the heart of the chaos, there are venues around the city which have live music every night. Showlistaustin.com and austinchronicle.com/music are the best places to find out who's playing.

Also the CIA (Canadians in Austin) throw a party every year. I have lots of Canuck friends here.

Like in any major party city, check out the craigslist under the personals for unique stuff.

Heading over to Péché can be a next experience. A bit different from the party atmosphere of 6th Avenue, but still a neat party.
The menu has a French influence, and they bring out quite the dog and pony show when you order absinthe.
I like their bourbon selection. Your collection of usuals, then always a few rare choices (which of course you will pay a premium for).

Yes.
Be sure and check out the bats under Congress Avenue one evening. Largest urban bat colony in North America resides there.
