Loud and clear from something small!

I've heard a couple of Phil Jones amps and I liked their punchy , well defined sound . Their small diameter drivers ensure wide dispersion. There are lots of reasonable choices in the market, so finding something that meets your needs wont be hard.
One more thing - don't buy anything you haven't heard or trust anyone's opinion but yours. Some of the popular stuff sounds like doggie doo doo.

Thinking outside the box. For one gig with a single band, is anyone else in the band willing to hold onto the amp for you?

Hi only just seen this post, that would obviously be ideal but as bandleader I have been looking after all the gear so all guitar amps, drum kits are going back to their respective owners, I am negotiating storage of the PA at someones practice space (that we don't use) but I think they are not too keen to take any more gear in then necessary.
 
Where the wavelengths overlap, you'll get comb filtering. But - smaller drivers still have wider dispersion than bigger ones. Although comb filtering's destructive interference is generally bad for audio, guitar and bass sound smoother with it.
comb filtering in extremis is known as beaming in the US. You call it smoother, I call it lacking in upper mid tone unless you are right in front of it.
 
Sorry mate - i dont agree. Comb filtering is destructive interference caused by the interaction of wavelengths. Since wavelengths get shoter as you go higger in frequency, its more likely to occur at upper mid and high frquencies,. Beaming occurs when a speaker cant deliver sound over its rated coverage pattern and the sound field collapses.

yes. ''Beaming'' is what you get in upper mids from sidebyside mounted speakers. Destructive interference in the off axis position giving equivalent dispersion to a single large speaker.
 
Comb filtering / lobing or whatever you want to call it is nothing more then soundwaves of the same frequency getting in AND out of phase under different listening angles, you could call it angle dependent phase issues. It's actually the same thing that happens when room nodes (or waves that reflect back from walls) get in and out of phase with the signal produced by a subwoofer. But since the sound waves are so big they are not angle dependent but listener position dependent (but in basis it's the same principal). The same for diffraction, the phenomenon that happens at the sides of a cabinet, it's a 2nd sound source that will interfere with the original sound source (this one is also angle dependent).

Btw. I hate this phenomenon, 410's are a no go for me they beam like hell and their off-axis response is rugged, yuk!

Comb filtering is the destructive interference that occurs when sound waves collide. When you look at what happens on a spectrum analyzer, it resembles the outline of a comb -there are huge peaks and valleys between adjacent frequency bands. I'd call it hollow or weird sounding
 
I use a 2x10 as my big rig these days. I have a SWR small but heavy. I bet those types are easy to find. My main rig is a 1-12 Genz Benz shuttle. It handles all my usual small club stuff. The amps fit in the pocket of the gig bag. There are tons of decent options with less than 1/2 the foot print. Class D mini head and a small cab, ie 1-12 is pretty much the norm these days. Used cabs are easier if you are willing to have it small but heavier. A heavier cab also will put out more low end. Many of us are selling those off for ultra light. The common ones here are the Aguilar 1x12s. For all practical purposes they will go toe to toe with the 4x10
