loud stand-alone cab for slap/pop and metal?

Any suggestions, play mostly with some sort of overdrive/distortion but s/p is so much fun. I play with an inexpensive Ibanez 5 string, and currently have a Peavey Tour 450 head but will probably get a Gk 700rb or 1001 rb-II (but so many good reviews about the LmII...hmmm) haven't found info on the gk neo 410, not sure how an eden d410xlt does with a 5'er? (Love TB but not impressed with search function.) General consensus seems to be amp, cab companies don't give correct or pertinent info (1K not my fav. frequency) Basically same deal as every one else, loud ass drummer + 100 watt tube 4X12 guitard or 2 = me listening to them and not hearing myself. Sorry for the long post just need to vent, I like growly low mids no dub/regeea, any suggestions would be appreciated.:help:

Gearhead43 - I hear where you are coming from, but give the guys a break! I think he meant he likes to play slap bass music and metal music. Not necessarily at the same time, but does it really matter? We have a bass player in need of amp advice and we should all help him. In this case, leave your musical opinions at the door.

Even though slap bass supposedly :rolleyes: sounds better with the midrange frequencies of 400-800hz sucked out - resist the urge to do this live. You will end up not hearing yourself amongst the chaos of guitars. You will have to have an insane amount of speakers and amp horsepower to hear yourself with the smiley face tone on a loud stage. To save money and get more accomplished with less gear, keep the midrange flat (Contour knob on the GK all the way to the left), and just boost the upper mids at around 1-3khz). Boost 4khz and above a little bit and don't go crazy above 8khz. This way you focus the tone of your bass is frequencies you can hear - the audience can hear - and create sounds that penetrate that wall of guitar madness.

The Eden 410XLT will give you that thick/growly bass tone and can handle a 5 string fairly well. I feel the cab growls more than it handles the low end. I am in the porcess of replacing this cab with an Aguilar DB810 which will hopefully create more low end than two Eden XLT's.

Get as much amp wattage as you can. The 1001RB is the better choice. You need the headroom to handle the craziness of slap bass and the chaos of metal bass. Having the extra power is ALWAYS helpful. You can always turn down;)

The second best piece of advice I can give you is to try out as much as you can on your own - take a road trip if you have to with your bass in hand. Let your ears be the guide and stop looking at specs. Lastly, buy two of the same cab - two different brand cabs will not sound good running in tandem. Even running a 410 and 15 can be disasterous without a crossover directing lows to the 15 and mids/highs to the 410.

I play metal/heavy (usually distorted/overdriven) type stuff in a band (fingerstyle), however I slap n pop for kicks. Have heard on TB that tweeters don't do well with distortion, currently have a 4X10 w/o tweet. Basically wondering with the GK biamp can I essentially turn the tweeter off, have read very little about the general tone of the Gk neo 4X10, hoping to get away with 1 cab if possible. Thanx.

With most good cabs you can dial the tweet down or out anyway.
There are many different slap sounds. 15" can sound great with slap if you like a more 70's Larry Graham tone, but quad 10's are probably what you're after.

I recommend you keep your eye out for an SWR Goliath. Cheapish on the used market, Solid construction with deep bass.

From the reports on the G-K forum these guys are loving the G-K NEO 410's. Deeper than expected but excellent mid punch and definition. With the G-K head and speakon cable you control the horn from the amp head. You can also use the "Hi Cut" to cutoff frequencies from 5KHz up from the 10's if you want. :)
