Love it, hate it ....

I think this is one of those instruments (like Moserites, Danelectros, Italias and the like) where the appropriateness of the physical appearance really depends on the musical context. As the original post suggests, for a retro musical application the retro look is sweet. If that photo's not digitally enhanced the paint job looks amazing (automotive).

The paint job looks that amazing up close, too. If my camera did it justice, I'd post the NAMM pic I took.

Deusenberg makes much, much higher quality instruments than Mosrite or Danalectro ever thought of making, though. I'm stunned that someone here picked one up and thought it felt cheap, but I suppose different strokes, etc.

That's not good. What do you mean, though, that you played one but "it was a different model"? Do you mean the Starplayer, or the Violin bass?

If the one on the left of the picture is a Starplayer, then that's what I played. Sorry for the lack of precision, that was my only encounter with this brand.

IIRC it was setup okay, and wasn't difficult to play as such. I just found it uncomfortable and didn't like the feel of the neck. Some instruments feel as if everything just belongs where it is and this one didn't give me that feeling.

Up close it just looked cheesy to me, maybe that affected my perception of it's quality. As I said, I spent very little time with it, so maybe I shouldn't have ventured an opinion, thus the caveat in my original post.
