One thing i noticed is that the box is actualy made from 5/8ths mdf but the front baffle seems to be 1/16 thicker than the rest.
OK, got all my parts on Thursday night, put everything together on Saturday (I am a woodworker so the build part was straightforward for me); used 14 gauge lamp cord and soldered directly to the speaker lugs and 1/4" jack. fired it up for a test on Sunday and .....distorted sound! Speaker sounds like a fuzz bass, and at all levels and evenly. Checked my speaker cable to the head, bypassed the 1/4" jack, checked my solder connections, no difference. Pulled the speaker and direct-connected it to my stereo system out of the box, same problem.
Unless anyone has any suggestions, I'm going to contact PE and see what their policy is on bad speakers.

I called my contact at Parts Express and he looked at his resources and said there were no notes about problems with this particular run of S2010s, so I think it's just a bad roll of the dice. He said they had a shipment coming in this coming Friday (the 18th).

And I suspect somewhere down the road we come across the reason teenagers have skinny arms, which is so they can reach that spinning T-nut on the far side of the woofer with those needle-nose vice grips, while dad tries not to cuss too much in front of them...

Sorry, I'm not Duke, but I'll comment. As I think you know, you've lowered the tuning by lengthening the port. Rough guess - maybe 4hz? Reducing the port width will further lower the tuning, maybe by a little more than the 1hz per 1/2" Duke quoted for the stock port. Duke would have better estimates, but you might have to experiment, since these narrow shelf ports act longer than they are.Duke i do have a question for you. I added 1 1/2 inches to the length of the port. Any idea how much of the port will need to be blocked now that it is a little longer? i play a fiver so i'd like to get that lower tunning you where talking about.
