I added 1 1/2 inches to the length of the port. Any idea how much of the port will need to be blocked now that it is a little longer? i play a fiver so i'd like to get that lower tunning you where talking about.

Okay, using my modelling program to help me estimate, the extension probably lowered the tuning frequency by about 3 Hz (good guess, 1n3!).

I'd say try it like that and see if you get fartout. You might not; if you do, then block out a roughly 2.5" wide section of the port instead of the 4" wide section I suggested in the initial post.

I even came across a website that has a mini program for breaking in speakers. Its fun to hear the different frequencies by themselves. Here it is.

When I went to download the file, Trend Antivirus flagged it as containing a virus and blocked the download. Did you guys have any problems?

I didn't, but i think it might have said something about it being an uknown publisher. I'm not that techno savy sorry.

Nope, no issues at all. I scan everything before I open (or unzip) it. I use Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 11; I'm a computer/network geek for a living, so you can feel confident that I'm 100% correct at least 50% of the time. Nifty tool. I wish you could set the lower limit of the sweep as well. That's the only thing I could find wrong with it.

This little app was written back in 2007 and it's not "signed" by Microsoft; most home-brew apps aren't. Some trigger AV programs, some don't. Malware is hidden everywhere these days, so you really can't be too careful. Good for you for being cautious, MX21.

Audacity will produce a sine wave of any frequency you want. I made a short audio file of 30hz sine, then played it through WinAmp, set to loop.

I think the main objective is to flex and loosen up the suspension. A 30hz signal gives you the same excursion at lower wattage and volume than higher frequency content. Wife approved.

I have a laptop so can download the program, but I am technically challenged enough to not know how to get the signal from the computer through the speaker; do I connect the laptop to my head via a standard input jack, or what?

Your laptop has a 1/8" headphone out jack. Your amp has a 1/4" input. You need a cable or some combination of cable+adaptors, to connect the two. Have the volume and gain on your amp set to zero when you first power up, then bring both up slowly. You will have "four volume controls" to deal with in this scenario.

Volume of program running tones/music
Overall volume of laptop
Gain on amp
Volume on amp

In my admittedly unique case, my computer's audio out/in is connected to a mixer. My amp can be connected to my mixer via standard 1/4" unbalanced instrument cable. You can connect to either the instrument in or the effects return (on the back of amp) input jacks.

I have been lurking on the Talkbass forums for sometime now and started reading this thread a couple of hours ago (ok I'm retired) and just finished a little while ago. I just wanted to say that it has been a very enjoyable experience, not only have I learned a lot, but the courtesy and respect you all show toward one another in this forum is very refreashing to see. Can't say that about all the forums you see on some of the other web sites.
