It was very educational. I've lurked the PE speaker builder forums for a long time; most of that conversation is way over my head. I understand 6/12/18/24db slopes and how things can be out of phase b/c of the slope. And I know by sight what a resistor/capacitor/diode/choke are. But the relationships b/t them and what parts you're supposed to use to get what frequency cutoff/slope/moon phase and tides is way beyond my comprehension. Duke's mini-tutorial was a very kind gesture on his part. Helped my understand immensely. :)

Yeah the $40-ish to build the peak-taming-xover was not even a consideration for me. $40 for a xover on a $400 cab, sure, but not on this little guy. Gotta say; I'm laughing b/c I had two of everything in my cart, but then started thinking about the fact that I have no idea how this is going to sound. I'm sure it will sound good, but will it be good enough that I want another? Time will tell. I hope my parts get here soon so that if I really love it I can buy the other cab at the sale price. The only thing I did not buy and am kicking myself for is a tilt-back leg; dont' know if PE even sells it, but I forgot to look.

There is a reason that 99% of the time this kind of stuff is done at line level. If the response peaks in this speaker bother you that much, you should get a mini parametric pedal or a Presonus EQ3b and find a convenient way to transport it.

Point being, if you hate these peaks in this cabinet, you will hate every other bass cab on the market that has the same peaks. Doing it at line level will save you a bundle on custom designing passive filters for every box you buy.

@MX21: OH, don't I know that pain. I've had a set of EMG JVXs, battery box and tools I bought just for this install, sitting in my music room for three weeks. :rollno: I'm typically at work 11-12 hours/day, sometimes on weekends too. And we have a young toddler at home. There's always shopping, the honey-do list and the inevitable family obligations derailing my projects. I hope to get the EMGs installed this Friday; took a special day off from work and gave the wife money to "go do something with your sister." That's the way it is.

If I do it, I want a nice 210 stack with a tweeter on top and a micro head like an MB200 for a one trip rig. But just a 110 with some refinements, a tweeter, and xover supplies is $180 as I have it set. I can buy an MB112 for $280 or less. :hmm:

Hi Thud,

Yup, that grill should work fine. The "heavy duty" version is a bit beefier (harder to bend), in case you want to go with a bit more protection.

If you're asking about the panel-mount Neutrik Speakon jack that MX21 was looking at, after he checked the specs and found it to be too small I sorta crossed it off my mental list of things to look into. Here's his post:

Ok cool guys. Thanks. I'll be sticking around this thread. Going to order soon and it will be my first DIY adventure. Doing this because it's simple and cheap, compared to say a fEarful project. If I screw up or can't do it, I didn't lose out as much. :P And it may leave me some courage to venture towards a fEarful cut-kit in the future.

FWIW, the PE "economy" 10" metal grill I ordered will NOT fit properly over the driver. I knew this before I ordered it. I've lots of experience w/these cheapie PE grills and knew they ran small. I think the heavy-duty version is the same size, only made of thicker material.

Here's the economy grill I bought. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] The grill has an inside diameter of 9 1/8". The outside diameter of the S2010 is 10.0". So basically the grill will sit on top of the front gasket of the woofer. I will use small scraps of wood or "risers" of some kind to elevate the mounting tabs for the grill (you guys DID buy mounting tabs, I hope?) high enough to compensate for the grill sitting up so high. Mounting tabs: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I'll use screws to mount the grill and save the t-nuts for another project.

I eyeballed the cab and as best I could see, the 12" grill won't fit on the front of the cab (too large in diameter to fit on the cab's face). I could be wrong on that though. Even if the larger grill does fit on the cab face, I'm not sure that would look any better than the smaller grill sitting on top of the front gasket of the woofer. I'm OK with the grill sitting like that. It will protect the driver and won't look that bad. FYI.

I'm REALLY itching for the parts to come. Should have them by next Friday...75% chance of that. I know I won't be the first to build mine but I've got a good feeling that this is going to be a nice little cab, and that others will follow suit. I see a new club coming. :D

That's how it's supposed to sit. The thickness of the speaker's front gasket + height of the grill give adequate clearance for fairly long cone excursions. On my commercial cab, I use the plastic-tab grill mounting kit to clamp the grill in place.

Hmm. That's interesting. I have built three different subwoofer boxes for use in a car, with three different 12" woofers and the PE economy 12" grill did not fit over any of them properly. We'll see what happens. I would like to be wrong on this one. Thanks, Duke.
