My 2x12+2x6:

Thanks Chef!

Per the end of the previous thread, Don is bringing over a 'new design' 2 x 8/6.5 'long throw' neo cab for a brief tryout and review prior to shipping. I'll put up a picture of it in a couple of hours.

Here's a few of my favorites that I had the honor to try from the previous thread:

A wonderful, smooth 12/6 cab using that 3012LF woofer and Faital 6.5 mid:

A one way 15 cab loaded with a 3015... grindy and punchy:

And a Greenboy inspired 15/6.5 with the 3015LF/18sound mid (with Don!)... big sounding, smooth, even:

One more from my personal 'hit' list... a 212/6/tweeter with 3012LF's, the 18Sound mid, and a Selenium horn.... BIG sounding, loud, full, even... DEEP.... nice!

Translucent orange goodness. Mmmmm.

Ken, I've decided to sell my DB410 8 ohm. I'll keep the DB750 for now because, well, it's a DB750. But since you've played a number of his cabinets and are familiar with my tone goals, I wondered whether you might have a few thoughts?

For instance, I took the DB410 out on tour and kept my DB750 settings as follows: gain 10, EQ noon throughout, no boosts, master at 10-11. And it was enough for me for all the gigs we played. Still really feeling that sort of tube warmth with some note clarity thing.

Hello! I know you would LOVE the top end of the 15/6, but I'm just a touch concerned that the low end would be a bit too big and uncontrolled with that DB750 (which is the case with a lot of cabs and that head). Maybe others can chime in. The good news is, that 750 would have plenty of oomph at 8ohms to really power a 15/6 with the 3015LF/18 sound).

Edit: And yes, that Orange Sadowsky with singles is KILLER! (IMO!).

One thing I seriously advocate for bass players: A high quality variable high pass filter ahead of your amp. You can save a lot of speaker damage and tighten up your lows with something as simple as an LR 24 high pass @ 30-50hz. There're far more complex circuits, but that one has worked well for me.

I think Bongomania might know someone building something very similar to this.

Me, I'm thinking about a variable bandpass filter for bass as an awesome option - scalp the highs before they get ratty, scalp the lows before they bloom too badly, and so on. It'd be pretty awesome for a tweeter cab too, no need for a switch.

Anyway, I digress :) The DB750 might just be like the Iamp 800 - open down to 20hz for synth and drop tuning action. That feature does not get enough attention from anyone except Genz Benz (and power amp manufacturers, QSC in particular :)

Here is the 2 x 8 with 6 'in line' cab. The 8's are Ciare Neo's, but a bit heavy given the high power handling and heavy duty construction. The 6 is the 18Sound, crossed over around 900hz (Patterson crossover with attenuator). The cab weighs about 35 pounds and is 4ohm.

For size context, the head is the Markbass F1.

It kicks pretty hard... surprisingly deep, with a lot of mid frequency information. Very tight and even, and the mid driver adds a bit of sparkle and presence up top. Tighter and more aggressive in the mids than the 3012LF/18sound voicing.

Cool cab, and those 8's are heavy duty!!!!

Actually, the iAmp and the old SWR stuff are kind of the outliers with that stupid deep extension. Virtually every other head I've played has a 'reasonable' low end cut-off. The DB750's issue to my ear isn't that it goes too deep in an absolute sense, but more the lack of upper bass and low mid control that makes them sound a bit boomy with some cabs.

The VAST majority of heads don't need extra help in controlling the low end IMO and IME.

One interesting thing is that the 3015LF type cabs with 4cf or so are not the least bit peakey in the upper bass/low mids, to my ears. Much less midbass hump than your average cab. They extend a lot lower though, which can also muddy stuff up.

I'd say it's less than a vast majority even; to be honest, I find the Gallien Krueger low end shelving a bit inadequate compared to say, Genz Benz. A 1001 rb II and a Shuttle 6.0 with the same cab, for example, you can see a lot more cone movement (at least with my cabs).

Ampeg's solid state stuff seems a little woofy down low too.

Markbass seems to have a very tight bottom, up to even compressing the low end a little it seems like.

But many brands do a much worse job than QSC or Genz, for sure. Even if they do an adequate job.

That 2x8 looks really cool KJung, especailly with the F1 on top.
Also, one quick question for you KJung (I know I'll be able to catch you in this thread) - How loud can you get with your AE410 and a LMII or F1?

Sorry for going OT guys.

Talking about volume is always difficult. The only thing I can say is that it can keep up with a 12 piece funk/pop band crankin'. Of course, that is still not like a hard rock band with Marshall's. I feel that the F1 and LMII can pretty much drive the AE410 to full volume, although I'm sure you could extend the low end a bit more and open up the bottom with something like a Mesa M6 or a DB750.

I don't have any issues though with the rig compressing when I dig in, or slap aggressively at a volume that keeps up with a moderately loud drummer and a 'reasonable' guitar and keyboard volume.

Hope that helps. It is a very punchy rig, and hence louder than you would thing, but it's not a 'rafter shaker' in the low end.

I bought this from Chef, sold it locally and then bought it back yesterday. Its the LDS version of the 15/6. What I especially like about it, besides the tone and 42LB weight, is that Don put in a level control for the midrange driver so I can cut or add mids. I'm not certain, but I dont think most fEarful cabs have that feature.

I have a gig (stretched over 3 days) in a large convention centre in February where this will be very useful as well as outside gigs from time to time.

I'm going to pair this up with one of my UL112s to fill out the bottom end in environments where two 112s would not be enough to do it. These situations often do not have PA support and I think adding some girth will really fill-out my band's sound, which is a 3 piece.

Look famaliar Ken?:p
