low-e string very distored / popping sound, knob controls too :(

hey all, im having a problem with my bass. first of all i thought this was weird but, not necessarily a problem but i can put a 1/4" plug into my bass about 3/4 then the rest i gotta use some force to put the rest in, then i hear a loud click when it locks into place. this normal?

2nd and whats the real problem is that whenever the low-e is plucked it makes a loud distorted / popping sound. all my other strings, even when hit all together at once dont make any distortion. also, when i hit the low-e the red clip light on my amp lights up (the whole time it is played) any idea what i should do to fix this? also, i notice when i turn my volume and / or tone knob on my bass i have an audible scratching / distorted sound coming out of my amp.

this is my "spare" bass, my main bass has none of these problems at all, i switched cables and tried different amps and narrowed the problem down to my bass and since this is my spare bass id really prefer not taking this to shop to fix since i only paid $40 for it. (believe it or not its a nice lookin bass, ibanez and great condition).

I am no expert, but I'll give you my 2 cents' worth & a bump:
*Scratching* sound from amp- likely dirty pots; maybe try some contact cleaner?
*Clip light on all the time*- If the other bass doesn't have this issue, maybe something's wrong internally(w/the spare bass), like a short circuit; again, a guess.
*Distorting E*- Perhaps the E is adjusted too low/close to the PU, causing too much signal to hit the amp.
*Plugging in difficulty*- IME most basses are like this, but not so bad that it's actually that tough to get it in- along w/the clip light deal, this may indicate something wrong inside the bass' control cavity.

oh i have the exact same problem, this post looks a little old but hopefully someone will read this, basically i have this ibanez srx350 and same thing happens the E string is waaaaay too loud and the rest are quiter and the clip goes off on my amp and i hear a little distortion when i hit the string, and i am about to lower the pickup and ill post a reply if it worked
