One of my nephews found an ipod mini today, which was a pretty cool thing. When you think about how small they are and how careless young teens around my town are with their property ( it was found in a school ) it isn't hard to believe that someone would lose one.

What really made our day was that it was full of Iron Maiden, Metallica, System of a Down, Judas Priest, etc. Whoever this kid was, he had a good taste in music.

Oh, btw, my nephew found it under a table in the school on Sunday, and it was outside I think.

edit - I do feel kind of bad that someone did lose the thing.

my nephew has it, its his school and not mine. He is keeping the ipod, I just put the songs on my computer. Not much I can do when I do not even know the exact location of the school either.

edit - now that I think about it, there are about seven or eight different schools that he could have been skating at today when he found it. I would assume it was one of the high schools, but he never specified which school it was.

thats what I would do, but my nephew is an a-hole. I feel lucky because I was able to get Metallica's Ride the Lighting, Black Album, and Garage Inc. 1 and 2, two live Iron Maiden Albums, Two judas priest albums, SOAD's first three albums, and some more music for free.

And my nephew told me that the Ipod had the guy's name and picture in it, after I cleared it. He knows what the guy looks like, but definitely won't turn it in.

Eyebrow cos I find it funny that it's "found". I don't think I'd carelessly lose a couple hundred dollar item.
Rolly eyes for your actions. Keeping it? TAKING THE MUSIC FROM IT? You should be ashamed, embarassed and definitely NOT bragging about it.

So your nephew knows exactly who it belongs to, and he still won't turn it in? Legally that might not be stealing, but it definitely shows his moral character. You are also just as much to blame. You decided to milk the situation and get free music that this kid bought off iTunes, and look the other way to let your nephew steal the iPod. You disgust me.

This is why most people think so lowly of teenagers these days. I don't blame them.

Your actions have been downright disgraceful. You acquired lost property, and rather than see that it is returned, you've decided to steal his music and his property.

Now you see, in the UK, a crime would have been committed by you taking this. Perhaps you could have argued that identifying the owner would have been impossible, but since the owners name was contained within the iPod, you would now be guilty of theft, with your defence obliterated.

You disgust me, you ought to see that the item is returned. Really, scum like you spoils it for everyone else, it pities me that even lost property would be viewed as "fair game" by you and your nephew. I'm sorry if I come off as harsh, but you've came in here and bragged about depriving some kid of this when you could have easily handed it in.

You know, I don't think that its worth bagging on him for copying the music, yes it's breaking copyrights i know.............

As for his nephew, this is obviously not his call. It is up to his nephew and brother to make that choice. I do think the right thing to do is contact the owner, but...........Who would lose an ipod????? This is not a cheap item and it was probably not treated with the care and respect it should have been so this is a good lesson learned by the original owner. I lost a few high dollar items in my youth through carelessness and not paying attention. I learned my lesson and take much better care of my stuff now.

:mad: Turn it in. That's the only real solution, and the only fair thing to do. Some kid is probably crying himself to sleep over this. The negative karma points you'll get from this aren't worth it. If it makes any difference to you, this forum is full of good, caring, giving people that take care of their own- and I'm proud to be part of this board. I don't know if you've been involved in any of the good things that we've done here, but I would hope you would get involved.

Furthermore, since it has the kid's name and picture in it, you have no excuse for not marching your nephew down to the school it came from and getting hold of the rightful owner and handing it over to him. The hardware costs money, the songs cost money, why are you allowing your nephew to be a thieving little punk? Go kick his arse, show him right from wrong. I don't care if he IS a little ****head, maybe this will help snap him out of it and become a productive member of society. It's up to you to be a role model, so go do it.

I'm sorry, but no. If you take the "utmost" care of a $200 or whatever they are item, then you wont lost it. I rarely lose anything, and when I do, it's usally a pen. Worst thing I ever lost in my life was money put into a vending machine that didn't give me what I wanted!
Part of taking care of something is not losing it, IMO.

Accidents happen Ray, maybe you just got lucky. I've known people to spend £299 on a new phone and for it to drop through a hole in their coat pocket that they never knew they had. Yep, accidents happen. Even the things we try and take the most care of can still get lost, broken or stolen.

I'm a ****, but even i'd turn it back in. Take it off him, find out who this guy is, and give it to him personally, the thanks you will get from him will be more than worth it!

The Music thing isn't so bad really, I'd rather lose all my music that's on my iPod than the iPod itself.

I agree with Chris, stuff goes missing, Ray, accept it.

SOA_bassist - Stop being a selfish prick and help out a poor kid for losing his iPod, things like that can have strange sentimental value, to some people!

Saying that the person should have taken better care of it or not lost it is poor justification for not doing the right thing and turning it in.

You're hurting your nephew by allowing him to do the wrong thing. He needs to be taught ownership and respect for other people's things, and that includes returning objects that were lost to their rightful owners.

I just don't understand how musicians can steal music from other musicians and think it's OK. Stealing is never OK, and it's crazy to steal from your friends.

I left my iPod at the gym where I teach. Two teenagers found it and turned it in, along with the speakers I was using with it. I am eternally grateful to them, and I try to pay it forward. I definitely take care of my things, it was a fluke accident that I rushed out without it that day. My grandma was sick and I had to leave suddenly.

I wouldn't be surprised if the iPod gets broken. That's typically what happens when you keep something that isn't yours. Kharma at it's best.
