I won't comment on you taking the music from the iPod, as file sharing is a hot topic around these parts, but you should really do something to see that the item gets back to the school's lost and found. It's just the right thing to do.
As a side note, some of you guys might be better saving your "disgust" for truly loathsome people. You'll live longer.

Well, maybe one day you will leave your bass somewhere and somebody will "find" it and keep it for themselves.
i saw a comment here that the SOA stole tunes that were purchased from Itunes...thats impossible, and its wrong to assume that the music on the Ipod was even purchased. you can't play a song on itunes or any other program purchased from itunes unless you have the account/pw of the person who purchased the tunes. so the songs on the ipod had to have came from a CD or were downloaded illegally
neverthless, smack your nephew! i've had an ipod stolen from my gym locker last year and its a terrible experience...its a drag on the whole family given the inflated price of mp3 players such as the ipod these days...

Technically you both committed a crime... The law says that if you found something that does not belong to you, you have to turn it into police. If no one claimed the item for more then a week it's legally yours... If someone does, it's not...

Such a contradiction in this thread to a story on my local news over the weekend. Read on....
An older fella and his wife bought two Aladdin thermoses at a garage sale for $4 total. When they got home and opened the thermoses to clean, the guy "found" a total of $10,670 rolled up inside in $50's and $20's. This guy took the thermoses back to the garage sale and gave the money back. He was asked why he didn't keep the money, and he looked at the reporter like she was crazy for even suggesting it.
Now I know a $200 iPod and $11,000 cash are not exactly the same thing. But he that is faithful in little is faithful in much.

I gotta admit, I might just gleep the music off it myself, but then I'd turn it in. I think the fact that you wiped it for him is aiding and abetting. You're not showing a very good example yourself.

It was obviously forgotten, it turn it in that money could be a lot of cool toys but, its not mine...

You serious? If I had found that money, since it was from a previous owner, no one really knew it was there. No harm.
But for that Ipod, someone knows it's missing. Give it back, you'll feel much better, trust me, I know.
I suppose that's how I'm rationalizing it...

Alright, going to make this quick and easy.
The music I am keeping off of the thing I was going to be getting for free anyway, from a friend, or I had bought before. He was going to let me borrow a lot of his cd's, and all of the albums I am keeping from the Ipod he was going to let me borrow.
If I found the Ipod, I would have turned it in ASAP, not because it is obviously the right thing to do, but because I would know which school to bring it to. My nephew would not tell me which school. I assumed it was his school, but there are about 7 or 8 schools they skate at, and he was not in his city the day he went skating, he was here in Yucca Valley. If I had any control over my nephew I would have had him turned it in, especially once I found out he had a way to find the owner, but I have no way to make him turn it in.
And people lose things like Ipod's, jewelry, etc. In schools in this town all of the time. You won't believe how many times I have found Jewelery, clothes, etc. in school. I turned them in, because I knew what school they were from, since I was in the school at the time. There are always MP3 players, cd players, etc. at these schools, in the lost and found ( I think you need a way to prove the item is yours before you take it ).
The only thing I can see that I did that was actually " wrong " that I had control over is clearing the ipod's memory before checking the photo's on it.
I was getting the music for free from another source anyway, I have no control over my nephew because of his mom, and I had no way of finding out which school they were skating at.
So I guess I still feel pretty lucky.
