Luthier or quack

Im about to hire a luthier locally for various projects- bass assembly, upright repairs, custom worrk... You name it Ive quite the list..

What's a good way to establish if a luthier is good or quackish? Maybe some key questions or some 'oh hell no' signs ?

I know guys who use him, and he seems to do good work. But a) im no luthier, and b) im mainly curious of how to tell, rather than concerned that this particular guy is good

Inspect his work firsthand if he's got some to show. Do your own research on what the repair, assembly, custom work should take to get done and then ask him lots of questions. If he knows what he's doing, it should either jive with your own research or build on it an go way beyond your understanding...
