LYRICS! DROP EM HERE!

Does anyone else have a really hard time reading or judging lyrics without hearing the music? Anyway, I agree that Joe Nerve's song Fly is really well written.

Here's my most recent song, about a conflicted man who is trying to reconcile his belief in religion and science. Musically it's kind of Jason Mraz-y with lots of jazz chords in a pop context. It's called Lens of Gold.

Halfway lost, I'm halfway there
Mind drifts from one to another
I left my eyes in disrepair
Truth and beauty's all I need
I do believe one leads to the other
But I've got my doubts, I swear

CHORUS:
Don't tell me about the rules of old
the ones we've always held so dearly
Cause looking through my lens of gold
I think I see the sun more clearly now
And the gold surrounds me

Water flows beneath my eyes
Looking down from the bank of a river
Swept along into the deeper blue
The lesson's plain for me to find
In the hand of the heavenly Giver
And now the world looks a little more new

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
Sunlight flickers through the sky
I hear the orchard sigh
Say 'hello' to unknown season
Planets falling all around
I'm getting lost in sight and sound
And I think I know the reason

I lost my eyes and I don't care
You know I live this life for another
Old clay vessel in a state of disrepair
Truth and beauty's all I need
I still believe one leads to the other
But I've got my doubts, I swear

CHORUS:
So don't tell me about the rules of old
The ones we've always held so dearly
Cause looking through my lens of gold
I think I see the sun more clearly
It shines severely
And I say sincerely now
That the gold surrounds me

And I've just had a realization, is it just me, or all we all prog or metal guys on this thread?

I have progressive tendencies in my writing, but I definitely write my fair share of rap too. :) I very much enjoy imagery, symbolism, and mid-line rhymes (for example, toward the end, "othewise | other eyes")

This is song can best be thought of as poetry read to a 5/8 beat, sort of like slam poetry and very Soul Coughing-esque:

"Artificial Dreams"

Color me yellow with joy
I want to feel the clouds I've found, hear sounds around all while sitting, lying, eyes stuck open, mouth agape
Can't sleep in the dark of night, dark of day, or any of the in-betweens, it seems
My soul is restless, yearning for more than this
I'm a victim of a daytime world

Escape
Dream while awake
This could take
Some time

Shirts and pants pass walking upright
My peripheral vision sees only when and what I want
While street pharmacists, artists, and animal rights activists harmoniously co-exist
I exit
This realm of blinding darkness that's hard to miss for the insomniac, farmer, and myself.
I demand more than this, as the victim of a daytime world

Escape
Dream while awake
This could take
Some time

Transcendence and penance
Serving a life sentence and hence
My apprehension to think other wise
While other eyes press and undress,
Stripping me naked to my core,
Judging the soul. My goal: to escape the role I play -
the victim of a daytime world

Sweet relief
Finally serenity
Sweet relief
Self-induced
Sweet relief
Just this once

Marvelous. That's extremely good bro. Although I picture a more Pink Floyd or Genesis feel.

Awesome. I like some of the more nonsensical elements (like mentioning animal rights activists, artists, etc. living in harmony (where'd that come from!)) as a representation of the speaker's disillusion with the world. I take it this song is about drug trips or self-imposed insanity?

And Joe
the first song had me worried.....:hiding:

Just want to post one more worrisome one, and then one that's heartfelt. Going to read through this entire thread after that. Have to admit being guilty of selfishness as I've only kind of glazed over a handful of the lyrics here, but I'm looking forward actually to seeing all this. It's inspiring.

Anyhow... while busting through a juvenile stage of my writing I put out a lot of things like road rage and this one that actually took The Nerve! a bit of a ways.

Spank the Monkey

I don't care anymore I did not do to you the things you seem to think I did
But you don't want to try and take a look at it any other way
I said it, I sang it, I screamed it, I wispered it - I love you
At least I think I do
Do you think it's possible I might have had a bad day too

It's easier to spank the monkey, spank the monkey, spank the monkey, spank it

Push and shove and twist and pull and tug me say love me then I smile
For a little while
Then I'm five minutes late and I find myself wishing I were dead
It don't hold any water and more to blame your bitterness on PMS
You popped my brain, but the swell is still the same
Theres nothing left to guess

It's easier to spank the monkey, spank the monkey, spank the monke.... spank it!

And the next song I don't consider my best, but it's absolutely my favorite. I felt like I conveyed (at least for myself) what I wanted. I played all instruments and wanted to really express myself on the guitar (not bass)... it's about giving our power over to others. With a twist of confusion and anger at the powers above. I was real hurt and pissed at someone. :) And as with most my material I think it needs the music to really convey anything.

Over and Over

I don't believe in your religion
I don't believe in any God that starts a war
I don't believe in any promises you make
Keep telling stories that are lost in time
Over and over

Took the book from off the shelf to find a man to blind me
Bind me find me hiding all over the world
I took a look beneath the skin of another I called a brother I called a friend
Over and over, now it's over again

I spit a prayer into the sky this morning
Sent a blessing to the ones I know
Sent a very very special one to you

Took the book from off the shelf... (repeat chorus - guitar solo and out).

Over and Over | Joe Nerve

Picture very Pink Floyd-ish style song that has soft, melodic verses, and then explodes into very jam-oriented passages of instrumental sections.

Opening up with a very echo and reverb-ed bass riff (like Cygnus X-1 meets Echoes). Closes with it too.

UNSEALED SECRETS

Ocean of the deepest black,
reveal the secret of your birth.
Islands in the cosmic sea,
speak to me of your worth.
They seem to softly whisper,
of life outside of their vast walls.
And my heart is filled with dawning,
as they project the Master's call.

The moon's merely a reflection
of a greater sort of light.
And, too, there is reflection,
in it's orbital fight.

The sky is just the ceiling,
proceeding to another floor,
leading up on to the rooftops,
to see the real sky through the door.

And standing here, enlightened,
to the truth You have revealed.
I see Your face more clearly.
The secrets are unsealed.

Very different from "To the Prize" :p

However, that's a good thing. it means we'll have the steady rockers and *SPOILER ALERT* maybe a ballad-esque key-oriented song for those in the audience with shorter attention spans, and those who enjoy to hear a band jam and rock out, and really dig into the music will have our proggier, crazy stuff. :D

Just by the way, the song is about how when you really look into the way the universe works ("asking it" about it's origins, about why it's so awesome), you'll find the design of God all over (It echoing the Master's call). God is revealed quite clearly in creation if you look close enough. (same theme as Fingerprints (see earlier pages)).

Self-imposed insanity is definitely an interesting take on things. It works very well.

I have a tendency to write from the perspective of an outcast, someone who is searching for a sense of belonging, in any of the various aspects of life.

"While street pharmacists, artists, and animal rights activists harmoniously co-exist"
This line is meant to subtly portray the city, where a wide array of people are constantly about. I felt that it helped tie back into the theme of a lack of recognizable identity; even with the diversity of a city, one is still just a face in the crowd. "Harmonious coexistence" embellishes upon that idea a bit more, that the aforementioned peoples are perfectly content with their empty (in the reader's eyes), indistinguishable lives.

Ultimately, the song is about dissociation from the world via drugs, which is also a bit of a theme amongst my writings. Even though my experience with drugs is extremely limited, I have this strange draw toward them, or at least the idea of them and what I believe they represent to someone who does them.

This is one that I wrote ages ago and preformed with my band. It's going on my solo album... whenever that gets finished. Lol.

"Lily Pad"

The cynosure of anything
All and everything
Under-appreciated, dignified
Beautiful to my eyes
And mine alone.

Cannot look away, forever she'll portray
A closing hole within the soul that's burning from the inside.
Cannot comprehend, forever I can spend
Learning, living, loving, breathing, seeing, and never truly being.

A cold, unmoving sea
Desolate and empty
Under-appreciated, dignified
Beautiful to my eyes
And mine alone.

Cannot look away, forever you'll portray
A closing hole within the soul that's burning from the inside
Cannot understand, forever I will spend
Learning, living, loving, breathing, seeing, and never truly being.

I live for eternity
Recreate society
Existing singularity
I am all that's left to be
I lay down on my lily pad.

Normally we'd end with another chorus, but like most chorus repetitions, I don't feel that they add anything lyrically, so I didn't post them.

ill join in this is the newest song my band have written lyrics by me.

Subhuman

Hiding in shadows
Stalking my prey
Into the night
To take you away

Creeping and crawling
Through ruined city
Feasting on lives
I feel no pity

I’m a subhuman
I’m a subhuman X 2

Born in a lab
Child of technology
Indoctrination
Perverse psychology

Bred for war
Feel no remorse
Insanity
A matter of course

I’m a subhuman
I’m a subhuman X 2

Glistening fangs
Razor claws
Inhuman appetite
Subhuman mind
Man’s creation
His damnation

Slow solo (Pete)

I’m a subhuman
I’m a subhuman X 2

From a chemical womb
That’s where I grew
Not man or beast
Memories few

I was never born
I never knew
How love did feel
Don’t know if it’s real

I’m a subhuman
I’m a subhuman X 2

Personal stuff. About a friend who's wasting their life and just doesn't care. Long story. :scowl:

THE THINGS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN

Have you ever been brought to you knees,
with nothing but the things you believe.
No, I don't think you have. And all I can do is laugh,
as you turn yourself into a fool.
A strung up puppet,
hung by lack of rules,

Dance on your strings.
Burning all the things.
You were meant to see.
Run in your own desire,
as you burn in your own fire.
And then you'll come crying back to me.

Catch your feathers on fire,
roasting in the sun.
The tournament's begun,
and all the eyes are on you.
I gave you all I could give,
I gave you all the warning,
but the very next morning,
you plunged the knife into my back.

And I smile: a bitter baracade,
as you lead a discordant parade.
With every dancer off the beat,
and out of time.
Out of sight, out of mind.
What did you expect to find?

Leading lemmings off the clifface.
Dancing in your disgrace.
Enjoying every second of the rat race.
All the while losing any place,
I'm screaming out to you!

Can't you see the ending?
Can you sense what I'm sending?
The ties, they could be mending,
but you keep on descending,
and rending, the truth right in two!

And I weep.
And I weep.
And I weep, for the things that could have been.

And I weep.
And I weep.
And I weep, for the things that could have been.

And I weep.
And I weep.
And I weep for the things that could have been.

And I weep.
And I weep.
And I weep for the things that could have been.

Dance on your strings.
Burning all the things.
You were meant to see.
Run in your own desire,
as you burn in your own fire.
And I cannot fight you anymore.

and I weep.
and I weep.
and I weep for the things that could have been.

and I weep.
and I weep.
and I weep for the things that could have been.

Funkmetalbass, excellent work, and the line "I live for eternity" sounds kind of like a Christian throw out (Which it may or not be) but I can appreciate it.

I wont respond with anything definitive. The beauty of poetry is that it means something different to everyone, and to rob you of that ability is blashpemous. :)

Riotorgun, I like it. I take it you're in a metal band.

cheers,we are a metal band however did you guess:p
my lyrics are always about a book or film or comicbook, not really into writing personal stuff.I liked your lyrics could almost hear a tune for it in my head as i read.

I've expanded "If That Don't Get Ya Laid" a little. If you doubt a line, imagine Lemmy singing it and see how it works...

Out on town tonight, looking for some love.
Gonna take you down when push comes to shove.
Have this drink, it’ll make you feel grand.
Afraid this’ll be just a one night stand.

Chorus
If that don’t get you laid, nothing will.
Gotta find my doctor, find my pill.
Gonna make you mine and do what I will.
You’re going down, I’m in for the kill.

Got this thing called rohypnol,
You’re gonna be my very own living doll.
Have to take to take up a dark back alley,
You can be my only one true Mustang Sally.

You know I got nothing,
No, never a thing,
And you know you’re the one,
Who gets up my ding-a-ling.

Did you ever feel so happy?
Did you ever feel so sad?
Did you ever feel so needy?
Did you ever feel so bad?

More Choruses and Whatnot

That has to be one of the most perverted songs I've read on this forum, Ed. It's freaking hilarious! :D (In a good way. It is satirical.) And yes, I can absolutely see Lemmy singing about his unabashed immorality when it comes to women.... oh, and hopefully this will get people thinking about what Mustang Salley really means, and they'll stop requesting it at cover band gigs (poor guys...). Then again, this is America.....they'll probably just request it more.....:rollno: :hiding:

I wish... Exams next week, getting über stoned next Friday, then off around Germany for a week and a half with the family and school. Anyway, isn't the World ending on Saturday? Even if I had the time to write some more it'd be futile ;)
