LYRICS! DROP EM HERE!

BTW, For "Another day on the battlefield", once I can get one, I'm breaking out a double neck. It starts with two light guitars. I play a very constant, rhythmic strumming part, while our guitarist is playing a kind of syncopated part. For now, it's two acoustics. In the future, it will be light, very clean, as close to acoustic sounding as possible electric. I have to play a bit of guitar on that one for the rhythm part at the beginning. Then, after the chorus, we hit the heavy. Bass comes in, and guitar starts filling more. For now, we have a 4 measure drum solo to give us both time to switch instruments. We're playing it for the first time this coming friday, along with "Only Human". wish us luck! (Oh, and if anybody has a doubleneck (bass and 6 string, just to be clear.) that I could borrow or buy for not to expensive that is within 2 hours of Athens, Georgia, I'd be very interested in offers....=)

Here are a couple of mine, one is basically two verses through a largely instrumental stoner rock song with an old school blues theme/story, the other is a little bit more twisted.

I've gone down the road,
I reaped what I sowed
at the demons crossroad
To find my soul is purging
Oh, how I wish I could stay
No debt to re-pay,
But I'm soon to be slayed
My time is slowly going.

Yeah, the hell-hounds are out,
The demons are out,
Gunning for my scalp

But I've gone down that road,
I'll reap what I sowed
my soul is doomed,
My life will soon be burning

The other song...well, there is a bit of a story behind it. Without going into too many details about it, a family member experienced a miscarriage and it upset me pretty badly. So, this was how I vented - a fairly gorey and slightly twisted song about childbirth. We had a good metal vocalist who used to have a very screechy sort of voice, but it sounded pretty brutal.

(Verse 1)
Two heads, one voice, torn and twisted by abuse
I am, I was, nothing, just refused
Tear my head on the walls, I'm coming
Stabbed in the back, that's right b*tch, keep running...

(Chorus)
I was never meant to be your life, your death, your mortality

(Verse 2)
Looking through your dead intentions,
Poised to be killed, failed to mention
Torture of your pelvic necking,
Burst a vessel, head injecting

(Verse 3)
Tearing through the uterus
Through the placenta, scratching the cervix
Choke on the chord that keeps you alive,
Embrace the cancer in which we thrive

(Breakdown)
Blood's not pumping, heart's not beating,
Lungs aren't formed so you aren't breathing
Claw your skin prison, hacking and coughing
Now submerged in filth in your 12 inch coffin.

I know, I know...I was a twisted kid

Cheers,
Jordan

I found a very old one of mine, the first song I penned (if that counts as an excuse...)

BLACK BUCK

20,000 feet up high,
Engines roar on through the sky.
Towards the south they fly,
The hour draws nigh

Last tanker passed,
This fuel’s gonna have to last.
Death’s dice were cast,
Will this flight be your last?

(Chorus)
They knew there was no turning back
They knew they had to attack
They flew onwards for ages
They flew into History’s pages
Black Buck

Lining up for the run,
This one’s not just for fun.
No sound of enemy guns,
Just wait ‘till you’re away and gone.

As the bombs drop the plane sways
As the bombs hit the gravel sprays
Flew through the radar maze
Fly on until the end of days

(Chorus)
(Solo)
(Chorus x3

I imagine that you like anatomy Jordy. Apart from that, and the darkness of them, I liked both songs. And as for the negatives, I don't really like metal that much, and never really have, so you might just ignore my comments if you wish. However, if I was a metalhead, I could see myself liking those. Keep writing.

And Edhunter, that song wasn't that bad. heck of a lot better than my first song.

I think I burned that one, then ground the ashes into a powder, and then burned the powder. In retrospect, it was a start, but I am still too ashamed of it to ever let it see the light of day again :rollno:

Oh, and Jordy, I'm no censor monkey, but I just thought if fair to warn you (if you don't already know) that if you use profanity that isn't censored by marks (@, #, $, %, ^, etc.), TB can hit you for a usage violation. I don't know if lyrics count, and they don't usually catch everything, but I just thought I should make sure you know so you don't get kicked by the moderators. Just in case.

Truth be told, I wrote my first lyrics about 6 years ago (at the age of 11) and they put me off writing until around a year ago...

The title says it all: "Mindless Zombies"

OPBASSMAN,

Thanks for the heads up!! Didn't realise it till you told me, fixed now :)

I might be a fisherman, but I'm not really that much into anatomy. The funny thing is, I don't typically like gorey lyrics. And I still don't personally view them as being that gorey, for me those lyrics were basically a bit of a vent over the tragedy we experienced. Kind of carthatic...

Nowadays, my lyrics are still written for metal music, but are more empowering. I just dont know where they are at the moment otherwise I would share them :(

Any time man. And yeah, that sounds pretty unique. UPLIFTING METAL!!! I don't think I've heard of too many songs or bands like that. And I get the whole venting thing. I've done it before, and I think that any lyricist does it at some point, and often after that. As the pen men for our bands, and musicians in general, we tend to express everything we want to communicate through music. And it (Music) is among the most powerful expressive mediums around when you really think about it. So of course it would be natural to make your anger into a song, or your sadness, or fear, etc.

OPBASSMAN,

You would actually be surprised, but alot of metal bands have lyrics that are empowering and uplifting, but I guess it needs to be taken in context as well. For example, Chimaira have many great lyrics that are empowering for a metalhead.
'I will not fail again
I will not let you win
F*** your power trip!!'

I guess alot of it is in the eye of the reader though. Personally, lyrics don't do it for me. I prefer listening to a vocalists actual tone, pitch and abilities to hold those long screams and make them sound good. When I wrote the song about childbirth, I wrote the syllables to fit vocal melodies within the song. Which is actually what I always do when I write lyrics, pretty much exactly how James Hetfield from Metallica writes his.

Cheers,
Jordan

When our band first got together, after a practice or two we said maybe we'd try throwing in a couple of originals (we're a covers band for the most part). I got excited, ran home and wrote up about five sets of lyrics in an hour. Later on my wife (the writer and librarian) looked at them and gave me her professional opinion that they were largely crap and needed rewriting. Around that same time we added a singer who brought along some of HIS originals.

So here's what I want to do: I'm going to throw in a couple of the singer's lyrics and some of mine. (Can you tell there's a bit of rivalry here?) Anyone who wants, go ahead and rank them from the ones you like the best to the ones you like the worst, or otherwise give any constructive criticism. I'm not going to say which are the singer's and which are mine.

Lead with your Heart:
Do What I say
and lead with your heart
don't them them tell you
that you don't matter

try any way
be at ease with yourself
everyone knows you're an angel inside

it won't matter now
and it won't matter then
just open your eyes
and see that I love you

there'll come a time
when we'll be just friends
remember love's to be spent
not for saving

there'll come a day
when the world will be ours
and the promise of friendship and love will be mated

come with me now
into the great beyond
and let your heart come away warmer

it sounds like nonsense
just words that don't rhyme
they mean nothing but I love you

just open your eyes
and lead with your heart
and don't let them tell you
that I don't need you
... and you don't need me

In the Red
Late last night I thought I’d take a look
At all the pretty colors in my checkbook
A little bit of blue and not a lot of black
There’s hardly any green and it’s holding me back
Then it hit me – I jumped up and said
Oh no no – I’m in the red!
Chorus – two voices
Hey ya got any cash? No I’m in the red
Hey ya got any scratch? And I wish I was dead.
Hey ya got any dough? Living on Wonder Bread
(together) Got any money baby – in the red?
Verse 2
Turning around, took a look in my wallet
Count up all my treasure if that’s what you call it
A parking tag and some chewing gum
Three forever stamps and two ticket stubs
But Benjamin’s gone and even George has fled
Oh no no – I’m in the red!
(Chorus)
Bridge
There’s a pretty girl that I knew in New York –
She had to pay for dinner and I felt like a dork!
Couldn’t buy a gift and I couldn’t take a cab
Couldn’t dress up nice and my chances were bad.
So do I really need cash to go home with you
And do all the things that boys and girls do?
(Chorus)
Verse 3
If I had some cash, I could hang at the mall
Not be stuck home with Ramen and cheese balls
If I had some cash, I could buy me a truck
And skip town when I’m down on my luck
If I had some cash, I could buy a guitar
And make some extra money at parties and bars
(Chorus 2x)

Without You
Once upon a day I saw this pretty girl
She met me smiling and she showed me round her world
You know I loved her then but I didn't have a clue
I just can't make it without you

Years have come and gone and troubles they been mine
Hand in hand we walk- we never crossed that line
You know I'd make it on my own, oh if I could
I just can't make it without you

Troubles that we've had would tear most love apart
Somehow we get closer you're touchin' all my heart
I never wanna be in a world without you
I just can't make it without you

American Slob
Chorus:
Everybody knows a guy like Jimmy
He’s just a regular American slob
The guy could be the King of Sweden
But all he wants is your second-hand job
Verse 1:
Jimmy went to spend some time in college
And see what the college people do
They showed him a mile-high pile of books
He said, “I’ll just watch the movie if it’s OK with you.”
Chorus (President, now…)
Verse 2:
One day Jimmy’s mama came over to visit
To see how her boy was getting by
She scrubbed and cleaned till the walls were shining
He groaned, “Now there’s two things to make me go blind.”
Chorus (Dalai Lama)
Solo
Verse 3:
Jimmy saw Sarah in the moonlight
Dancing to the music of the spheres
He stood there watching in awestruck silence
And said, “That girl knows how to shake her rear.”

I always like when these threads show up. Always helps get the juice flowing.

My songs are simple, and not all that full of imagery. I just try to paint a quick picture, and tell a little bit of a story. We are a roots Americana band that gets away with the cardinal sin in the blues scene: We play mostly our own material. All members of the band write, and we can easily fill a 4 our show with nothing but original stuff. I encourage anyone who plays in a band to try and write your own stuff. It's what all your heroes did, if you really want to be like them, it is what you ALL should be doing anyway.

One thing I can say is that seeing a bar full of people singing your tune back at you, is a VERY powerful feeling. Trust me, once it happens, you will jump through a lot of hoops to make it happen again!

In spite of my band being around for almost 15 years (http://www.casablancos.com), and releasing 10 albums, this one has yet to make it to a studio version. Still, this simple tune with the Little Feat beat always seems to be a crowd pleaser.

Now someone at the door come a knockin'
Just can't lift my head
Must have rocks on my chest, and I can't feel the rest,
I think I must surely be dead

'Cause the last 3 days, ain't nothin' but a haze
that you laid upon my mind
Sure would like to go and do it again,
baby, if you got the time

(chorus)
If you think I'm the man with the money, I ain't got a dime
Can't get no blood from a stone, or turn that muddy water into wine
Now you see you got the better of me, oh lord I got to make you mine
If you're the devil go on get me a pen, and I'll sign there on the dotted line

Well now, where did I put my wallet?
Now where did you put my spine?
I had'em both here yesterday, now where'd I park that car of mine?
I remember somebody was screamin', I just couldn't see
But by the mess in this place, and that look on your face, babe, you know it might have been me

(chorus) insert 5-10 minutes of Little Feat-esq jam session here

Repeat chorus and out

Since I also play a little (gulp) guitard, I'll include a more recent tune I wrote with my Alt Country side project appropriately named The Siders (http://www.thesiders.com). Again this is simple stuff, just trying to create a vibe and set a few characters in motion for the listener to think about.

Just Fine
© Copyright Steven T. Winston 2009

She was just a farm girl, and the apple in her eye was the whole wide world
but I'm as close as she'll get today
Now her brothers wanna kill me,
they wouldn't take me alive
guess I can't go back this time

(Chorus)
No ring on your finger,
no churchbell got to chime
but if there's no promise, there's no crime
Just the pain that lingers,
one of yours, and one of mine
I guess I knew you'd be just fine
Somehow I knew you'd be just fine

Hot dog and a PBR, on a big ol' stage I must be a rockstar,
or as close as I'll get today
Now we're riding down to Maryland
on that Carroll County line
but that was your town, never mine

(Chorus) Reintro and out

Here's a link to a boomy, poorly lit, off-night club gig we played

"Lead with your heart" and "without you" are the best to me.
"American slob" is kind of a fun kind of story song, so it could be pretty good. I could see it. Maybe a title change is in order...and I don't know what "Chorus (president) and Chorus (Dali Lama) are"...but yeah.
but "In the Red" wasn't exactly awesome. Cheesy and money-centered. lacking depth. Not really thought out sounding. songs about just not having any money are best kept short sweet, to the point, and blues. I didn't really like it at all. No offense if that was yours man. but I didn't really feel it. :hiding:

The upper mids are comin atcha
From thee computer stereo
The Feedback are hummin
Watch out for these tones, be wary of them

Plug your ears with somethin
Made from thee dense foam material
I know your not no dummy
When I yell at thee stand cleario

My head slopes back at 40 degrees
Accross the polar access
Most the time I kick with Greezy
Blakely Tuba defines the process

The lower mids are trimmed and sheared
Disconnected from thee synapses
Im so hot they call me freeze
Ironical in these tactics

I like when Ad-Rock
Raps rhymes about sucker MCs
I like it when Trever displays words
So mysteriously cryptic

I like to repeat the first word of a line
I do it all the time
It's my frame of mind
I don't like to rhyme
The word rhyme
But I just did, so check this out

This one goes out to Dave
Bust a hog quicker than my Macbook saves
Data
Faster then Nasa
Blast a Satellite
To stare atcha

But they can't see me
I live permanently underground
Presentin a sound
That's so ridiculously lame
Paradoxically inane
And when the Blakely's back in sync
Solved will be this game.

I'm really enjoying reading these lyrics!

Here's a song with the working tltle Stripmall:

In a stripmall culture he's a
rough rider to the sun
In a beach town playground he's
still lookin for the one
He's an outcast, iconoclast, fuel stoked
outlaw on the run

And his eyes see vistas that
no one else can see
And he's broken every rule just
tryin to be free
He's a strong, hard, fever scarred
man, livin in his own country

Chorus
And he's lookin for a lost dream
It's never too late
He's thinkin 'bout a bad scene
one he won't repeat
with eyes on the horizon
that's where he's gone
He's on the secret road now
He's goin home

There is a third verse but I keep changing it.
