M-Day Weekend Gigs - Who's Got 'Em?

I have a gig tonight; but, on Memorial Day, my band, The Conniptions, is the headliner for a major event here. We are expecting 4,000 - 5,000 people. They already had my band booked since last summer but since I also do events and concerts, I was asked to assist and this is one of the events I helped organize and we have had lots of multi-media ads and attention, including the front page of the newspaper last Sunday and yesterday.

This should be a really fun gig!

The annual performance of a church swing band I've been working with for 6 years is Sunday in Carmichael (burb of Sacramento). 18 pieces + 2 singers, 17 numbers, all older than I am, which is not young. 6-8 practices each year prior to performance.

Pay is cookies and coffee - actually, I do it for my own selfish reasons.

Reading through the sound system posts last week helped me understand the problems we have in a room that doubles as a basketball court, ceiling mounted sound system for mics only. I'm in the back, booming (GK MB115) to get the sound out, but should be OK as the former combo was fine.

Hope to get out to see friends playing at the Sacramento Jazz Festival. Funny when it started 38 years ago, it was a geezer fest of Dixieland jazz.... now I have at least 6 friends and classmates playing jazz/fusion/Santana cover/swing....

Playing in san jose tomorrow, pico rivera saturday, and riverside sunday. My long time drummer friends and I got picked up by a mexican country band, think dwight yoakam and alan jackson in spanish. Our tour starts this weekend and goes to the end of november.

That sounds AWESOME! Have fun!

My band, The Basinbillies are playing the Rose Festival in Portland on Sunday. The booking agent screwed up and told us we'd be opening for Justin Moore , but then told us it was a typo and we're actually on the side stage when the gates open. Oh well, still great exposure. Thinkin it might be a blessing in disguise to be the band rockin it while people mill about waiting for the actual show to start... Have fun everyone!

Reminds me of the time my band was told we'd be "opening for Waylon Jennings". We played, alright... in the parking lot, while folks lined up & waited to get in. No stage, just some hay bales, to make the asphalt country.

We did get to eat at the backstage catered buffet, sat with his band & schmoozed. Waylon wasn't there, he was probably at some spiffy local restaurant.

Did my job, hate the word gig, last night. Everyone must be gone for the m-day weekend.
We get paid by the door and percentage if the sales......32.50 each.....wow.

Had alot of fun! And OMG! did my bass sing! Amp rocked. At times it sounded like my 4001. Which is weird considering it fretless and a Warwick!

Once again, I was VERY pleased with my MoMark LMK/ 106 rig......WOW!

Quick recaps:

First band I've ever been in that actually played over Memorial Day and we've got three 1-nighters:

- Friday: Small-town bar, ~ 30 mile roundtrip

Average turnout, not a very good show performance wise and for me especially. The band had not played together for two weeks and it showed. Also were trying out some new songs.

- Saturday: Small-town street dance (our first of the season), 240 mi RT, hoping for good weather as our spring so far has been abnormally windy, cold and wet.

Quite possibly the most fun gig I've played in my life. We actually wound up inside (in a high-school gym), but sound was still surprisingly good. Shock of the night was an ASTOUNDING number of not just good-looking, but great-looking young ladies who showed up in skirts and sundresses and spent the whole night at the front of the stage. It seriously looked like a beer commercial or something. Absolutely not the crowd we were expecting given the venue (farm town population 300 at best in the middle of nowhere) -- but trust me, we weren't complaining. I'll try and get some pics from my drummer to validate this

- Sunday: Regional resort, 150 mi RT

Decent show... it was at a beach resort and weather was not conducive to boating (67 degrees, cloudy and high wind), but still wound up with a good crowd. Absolutely bare minimum floor space for the band so I went amp-less (SansAmp to board), which worked fine since I wound up standing in front of one of mains due to space. The third of 3 1-nighters so we were all pretty tired but managed to pull off a pretty good one.

Played out on the Red River (Texas side) to a crowd of about 15...plus the other two bands so maybe 24 in all. Told the promoter $12 a head was too much, watched as we setup the stage all the way through the first bands set as at least 20 cars pulled, then turned around and left.

Oh man, I feel your pain on that. That exact thing happened to my former band a couple years ago. The bar owner decided to charge cover (without telling or clearing it with us). We couldn't figure out why people were coming in, turning around and leaving till we went to the door at break and saw the table and cashbox set up. We were pissed-off to say the least, and even more so when he tried to stiff us out of some of our pay at the end of the night because "nobody showed up".

I see youre from El Paso. I would have tried to make one of your gigs, I live close to Pico and work not far from Riverside, but Im actually hopping on a bus to El Paso tonight and coming back on Monday.
