Well Mac doesn't recommend any. I had Norton on my old Emac, it ran a scan every month. It never ONCE detected a virus. My Windows Machine will detect a couple every scan (blocked viruses). When I bought my Macbook, I checked on Norton, they no longer even support Mac. The Mac people told me just use common sense (don't download unknown files from Nigeria) and you'll be fine. The Architecture is pretty stable so it is not near as easy for a virus to be effective. Mac at this point feels their security updates are all you need.
Well I don't think you can say you're completely safe, because anything's possible. But for what it's worth, I've had my powerbook for almost 2 years now without a single virus, bug, spyware... nothin.
I've had Macs for 10 years, never had a virus. Had my current mac for at least 5, never any viruses.
That being said, I run all security updates and rely on the virus scans in my e-mail programs. I also periodically defrag my hard drive.
You're mostly safe, but do use common sense. With the increasing popularity of Macs, I wouldn't be surprised if some people wrote viruses for them out there.

There is currently [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for Mac OS X, and spyware is not possible (any changes to the system require typing your password, so no invisible installations in the background.)
Just stay on top of the security updates and you should be good to go. There are anti-virus applications for apple if you want to be extra safe though.

One thing to consider...
Even though virus/spyware/malware is quite rare for the Mac OS, you can still pass viruses in email attachments/files to your Windows-using friends.
There are antivirus titles out there. Probably not a bad idea to sweep every once in a while.
