Pretty much every "Apple vs. PC" comparison that I've seen like this has huge flaws no matter what the verdict in the end. One of the better ones that I've seen though is the Macbook vs. others comparison that MaximumPC did two months back. Yeah, yeah..it's a PC magazine..but there are a lot of Mac users on staff including the senior editor if I'm not mistaken.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/can_apples_best_topple_pc_competition

This is a better comparison because it breaks the Macbooks down into three different categories and chooses several similarly spec'd laptops in each category. The results are mixed with Apple laptops and Windows-based laptops both coming out "victorious".

I'm no Apple naysayer (in fact I'll probably be getting an iPhone soon) but they do have their flaws and issues, as does MS. I think there is a just a little too much religious fervor in these conversations (on both sides) and it needs tempering.

EDIT: Not trying to turn this into a war of posting links to reviews...just thought that the one I posted is more well-rounded, objective and thought-out than the Popular Mechanics review that was posted. :)

Yeah sure why not?

As far as I'm concerned mac hardware isn't all that badly overpriced if at all. Not when you do fair comparisons with equivalent hardware. They do overchanrge on things like RAM but that stuff you can buy 3rd party and you're not forced to use apple only software...

I suppose it's a bit like the whole rickenbacker thing in a way.

And I dunno if you could call it much of a monopoly, I mean lets face it - in the computer world there arent many companies who havent at least TRIED to monopolise. It's their OS, and they want it run on their machines. Fair enough I say. Don't like it? Don't buy one and instead run FreeBSD on a custom built box or something. :)

My point is not that it isn't good now--it certainly is. I just think that some good old capitalistic competition could take the performance even further while driving down the price point. Sure, apple would lose some money, but would most likely gain it back by making their products accessible to a MUCH wider group of people.

So you support complete monopoly without other companies providing competition which in effect would drive down prices and increase quality even more?

Hmmm... I've never seen a more quality PC than a Mac platform. How much better do you think it could be made? My guess is that the market might become flooded with crappy eMachines type PC's running OSX.

I think the downfall of most PCs is windows. Run one with Ubuntu or something and it's at least equal to a mac.

There are plenty of high end PCs out there... and crappy ones. But that's what the market demands. If Apple opened up, there would be budget models sure, but I'm sure some companies could do something new and exciting.

That's funny. Windows got sued a few years back for integrating too many things in their OS, and Apple was one of their biggest nay-sayers. Now Apple's biggest selling point is exactly what Windows got sued for, and what they were crying out against.

Show me any given Mac desktop and I could build a better machine for less money. They just wouldn't let me load OSX on it. The only difference hardware-wise is the little chip on their mobos that must be there for OSX to be loaded.

It would definately be interesting. I think one of the reasons Apple has been hesitant to release licenses to hardware manufacturers is that they believe the quality would suffer. Their industrial design department is one of the best in the world IMHO, but I wouldn't mind somebody elses interpretation as well.

I remember way back in the 90's when I worked at Dark Horse Comics... we had a few Power Computing clones. There were nothing special at all... just ugly grey towers like every other PC. I think this experiment soured Apple to the idea... well that and Jobs returning to the company. As long as Steve is in charge I do not see anyone every making a licensed Mac.

The reason Apple killed CHRP licensing is because it was bleeding the company dry. The were awash in red ink because they were losing a vast amount of sales to the cloners.

Apple is, always has been and will continue to be a hardware company. 60% of their revenues come from hardware sales. There's no way selling copies of OS X would recoup the Billions they would lose due to lost hardware sales.

Like WP4F says, Apple has always been a hardware company. Software and industrial design let them charge a premium for hardware. They have consistently been one of the most profitable computer makers in the industry. Why would they change this successful business strategy?

Mac isn't running a monopoly, they are running a business. The money mac makes goes back into the company to research and develop new stuff. They aren't bleeding their customers dry. They give away a lot of free stuff and have places to go where you can download even more free stuff. The updates and fixes are free. They have a great forum support center where you can go ask for hardware and software help.

Sure, every other year they put out an updated platform for around $150. This is how they ask for customer support. And when you buy the new product it has all the latest upgrades and great new features. If you're really into video, art or recording then you can buy their "Pro" line of products. Most of the creative ppl I know run macs.

I don't write code or build stuff on computer. i'm fairly new to computing. I may be wrong, but as far as I know you can write stuff for mac and submit it.

It seems really cut and dry to me. If you don't want to support mac and all the stuff they do, don't buy their product.

I don't know anything about Windows stuff. If you really want complete freedom to create the greatest stuff I hear Linux is the way to go. I don't know anything about Linux either, but ppl I know who are really computer savvy swear by Linux.
