Big story incoming...bass guitar fanaticism is real...
TLDR: I just bought my dream bass a Canadian Afterburner 3x 6 String with wenge/wenge neck and I am very excited lol.
Well I feel like a I can't wait to reveal this anymore... my Dingwall Ng3-sold in 2 days and I next week i will have my new baby Ding shipped so may as well show it off!
I have fallen in love with Dingwall basses after actually being a bit of a hater (clanky djent mess meme hate) . In Covid I imported a NG3-6 from Ireland( to extreme remote Australia) and gave it the full works with Canadian knobs and USA hipshot hardware and it became my main bass that i truly love. That being said my favourite bass that I have ever owned and played in my beloved 1994 Warwick thumb NT6 which has the 7 piece wenge bubinga neck that has been played for 1000's of hours and is shiny and worn smooth from play and is beyond this world. That bass feels like it is made from rock and it also can't turn a knob and sound like 4 different basses hence why the NG3 became main. Point is I have a mega soft spot for wenge already.
I have been on a journey in my bass collecting where I have like 5 basses that make up the majority of my playing basses. In my head I have said that I want to limit myself to a small number of basses but them all be very distinct:
The Furious 5:
1. Stingray 5 ( before upgrade)
2. Thumb bass 6
3. Dingwall 6
4. Wal/wal style 6
5. Spector 4 P/J (no photo yet)
I also have a P bass and a fretless and a few other things for fun but this is the basses that get play/fresh strings and lots of love/play.
Anyway in my head I decided that I want to limit this collection (for now) and so my dream is to upgrade into the best in slot for each bass.
Just for reference here is how my collection sits:
1. My Stingray is a Musicman SUB5 (usa) that I have stripped and contoured and painted (matte army green). I love this bass and it would take something very very special to pip it.
2. Thumb 6 NT6 1994. Golden Era Thumb 502 6 string thumb ever built. Irreplaceable to me.
3. Dingwall ( this is the upgrade slot and the reason for this ridiculous post)
4. As I post almost weekly my Wal is months from completion after a 3.5 year wait. Pic as it is as of yesterday lol
5. Spector 4 P/J Have to specify 4 string and P/j as this is the true Spector tone configuration for me and the extended range basses sound different. Mine is a 2023 Spector Euro with a new, yet to be discussed, Haz prototype. An ns2 is obviously my next dream bass but I do really really love this bass! Long live Mike Starr and his unbelievable tone! RIP mate.

I told myself that after I recover from the eye watering cost of my Wal custom that I was going to order a Dingwall custom but try to spec it really simple to keep costs down. Still a big upgrade in price from the NG basses (double or more). Then this one came up in Oz for a fair price with nearly every spec I would have chosen (Afterburner 1/ 3x pickups/darkglass TC/ Wenge,wenge neck/ solid colour. Bonus it was owned by a very cool prog bassist that is in a very cool band I like! Admittedly white is not my 1st colour pick but nothing a paint booth cant fix (maybe...). The thing is that the Oz dollar is in the dirt and import is ridiculous, custom Dingwall wait is 2 years, Wenge is already on the risky list and I feel that Dingwall are probably going to move away from it soon... So to get all of these specs in Oz for a decent price it was worth eating grass and flour for a few weeks. Also there is something utilitarian about a simple looking Dingwall that i really love. They just look too much with the exotic tops and paints and this bass just looks stunning like this. Anyway it'll be here next week so watch along and I promise pics and even a vid for fun. I have dreamed about a Dingwall wenge neck for a very very long time and am so beyond excited to try it.
That right there is a desert island looking bass to me!
