Steve Howe -Well yea.
Jeff Berlin-Because he makes Steve sound so awesome, and plays well with Vinnie.
Chick Corea -Keys to the 10th power.
Vinnie Calauta -There will be groove.
Sade -The sexiest voice on the planet.

Fun thread. "Still alive" makes this harder though... and it totally depends what style of music we're going for.

Let me start with hard rock/metal/hardcore:
  • Tim Alexander on drums
  • David Wm Sims on bass
  • Adam Jones on guitar
  • ? Who do you add to that trio? That's a lot of sound right there.
  • Chris Cornell on vocals

Groovier alt rock:
  • Matt Cameron on drums
  • Mike Watt on bass
  • Nels Cline on guitar
  • Same as previous list! So much sound!
  • People would probably want a vocalist. Let's toss Cornell in again lol

Jazz / jazzy blues:
  • Bernard Purdie on drums
  • Ron Carter on bass
  • Herbie Hancock on keys
  • John McLaughlin on guitar

Todd Rundgren-gtr/vocals
Lol Creme-gtr/vocals
Bill Bruford-drums
Tom Brislin-keys
Kasim Sulton-bass/vocals

...also good would be:
Jimmy Page-gtr
Jaz Coleman-vocals/keys/violin
Dave Grohl-drums
John Paul Jones-bass/keys
Tony Levin-stick

...but I totally agree the best was Anderson/Bruford/Howe/Squire/Wakeman.

I have like several different line ups in my head. But for his one...

Vocals:Keith Buckley and Greg p from every time I die and the Dillinger escape plan. I think both of them are tied for the most versatile vocalists in the hardcore/metal scene with the ability to go from beautiful cleans with some falsetto to very unique harsh vocals. Keith is also a very witty lyricist.

Bass: Brian Cook of russian circles/botch/ these arms are snakes/ Roy. While not the worlds most technical player, brian can create sounds and atmosphere with the bass that I've never seen from anyone else. He also has a some pretty decent back up vocals and sings lead in Roy.

Guitar: Steven Wilson of porcupine tree. This guy can write. Man he's a great song writer and with these guys he could create some crazy interesting music. He also has a beautiful voice.

Drums: Chris Pennie of the Dillinger escape plan/ coheed and Cambria. In my opinion the most talented drummer in heavy music. That's really my only reason. Seems like he could play anything. Plus he had a degree in production from MIT so the album would sound pretty good.

Let's also throw in the entire brass/horn section from streetlight manifesto for kicks and make this band crazy.

Love the Todd line up. Kasim Sultan has to one of the most unknown and unsung hero's in the music business.

Todd Rundgren-gtr/vocals
Lol Creme-gtr/vocals
Bill Bruford-drums
Tom Brislin-keys
Kasim Sulton-bass/vocals

...also good would be:
Jimmy Page-gtr
Jaz Coleman-vocals/keys/violin
Dave Grohl-drums
John Paul Jones-bass/keys
Tony Levin-stick

...but I totally agree the best was Anderson/Bruford/Howe/Squire/Wakeman.

In the past six months or ever since I heard that Geddy Lee played at one of the Who's Teenage Cancer Trust Fund gigs last year, I've had a fantasy about a "Super Who" group doing a tour playing all Who music.

Let's say you have 5 spots open and you can have whoever you want in the band. If you choose a person who can fill 2 rolls at the same time while playing live, then you can have an extra roll open.

What living people would you pick and why?

My Picks,

1.
Drums - Danny Carey of TOOL
I don't know if he could play things like Death Metal the way others do, but he's such a busy drummer and makes tons of fills. This and his ability to create and keep tempo on really difficult time signatures makes him my drum winner. I think he would find a way to make any genre's drums interesting.

2.
Vocals - Randy Blythe of Lamb of God
He's my favorite lyricist and he has one of the best vocals in metal. He can Growl, Screech, and do melodies all the while being 100% understandable. So many other vocalists growl in a way that you'd never be able to understand what they are saying. He enunciates every word perfectly.

3.
Bass - Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse
My absolute favorite bass tone and a very good player. There are bassists who can play faster or more technical and more of a variety of styles, but I don't think there would be many times where he just COULDN'T play the parts. His work on Frantic Disembowelment is enough for me to feel comfortable in his abilities.

4.
Guitars - Chris Broderick formerly of Megadeth
Smoothest, fast hands on guitar. Plays every bit as fast as Petrucci, Malmstein, and Bato but has a soft sounding technique that almost eradicates transition noises. He has one of the fastest and cleanest sweeps I've ever heard. He is also classically trained and is well versed in multiple genres including classical, flamenco, and jazz.

5
. Keyboards/Synth/Moog pedals/Backup vocals - Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater
The man who will tie it all together. Singing backup for Blythe, soloing along with Broderick, bass battling Webster, and playing intricate, unusual time signatures that harmonize with Carey. He's always been my number 2 favorite keyboardist until recently. My number 1 was Janne Wirman but, he is a one trick pony. Rudess shows he can play the simple, the complex, and use every tone, channel, and technique you can need from classical to progressive metal. This spot was really hard to pick because you can shift the direction of the band greatly with just this last spot. Rudess gives you more options and fills multiple roles.

Alright. Let's here ya'lls.
Oh my gosh I love this post, just awesome!

1. Drums - Stewart Copeland (The Police)
2. Vocals - James Brown
3. Bass - James Jamerson (The Funk Brothers)
4. Guitars - Bobby Womack
5. Keyboards - Martin Gore (Depeche Mode)

Oddest group of people I know, but all are so talented which makes them "Super." lol

Like other people's, my "super group" existed in real life. They were each masters for their own respective instruments for their time and went by the name of Led Zeppelin. I mean supergroups can be great but that doesn't necessarily mean they would put out a great product(Chickenfoot, Audioslave). We know Zep did. Get them back together today with a creative drummer like Peart or Carey and good new music would be almost guaranteed.

good new music would be almost guaranteed.

Almost. I'm still of the mind that struggling, angst-filled youngsters write much better music than wealthy, happy groups who've already made it. There's something real in the emotion that drives the music, versus the attempts to recreate what made them famous (or worse - going in a new sappy/cheesy direction).
