I've tried both Warwicks and Ampegs in the UK and both are pretty heavy for small combos - I wouldn't want to have to lift them regularly - for portability and sound I prefer the Hartke Kickback, which is 120 watts and not that hard to lift.
I'm with Munji, though - my 300 watt Eden amp is only 14lbs, so why go for an Ampeg that weighs like 4 times as much and is less watts?
Why? Because after only a year of playing and being tight on money, a 300w Eden amp (and a cabinet, too? Which combo do you have, Bruce, 14 lbs. is pretty light?
IME spending that kind of money up front only puts more pressure on someone to excel immediately. You lose the ability to blame poor progress on your gear
For some reason people keep giving cookie-cutter answers to questions without getting into specifics. Here's what I don't know:
Which Ampeg is silverthread looking at?
Does it have an extension speaker jack?
What does silverthread consider light?
Would wheels help on a combo?
How loud will his gig be?
Will there be PA support?
