Making headless tuners?

Very informative, thanks you guys. I was checing out materials at hardware stores today, I think I can make a set of tuners for around $20. on the neck end, i plan to have a headstock and terminate the string ends on the backside of it. I'll see if I can post a diagram of what I mean.

If you can post pics of how you're doing your tuners! I'm about to start a bass build and was thinking of going headless.

Might be cool what you'll be doing on the headstock. I think Ritter does that on some of his basses?
