Maki's Two Cents (part 5)

Any advice on how not to suck at writing songs?

I've had a few things published (poetry, lyrics, short stories, articles) and once one of my stories was judged by a pretty well known author. He invited me to lunch and while we were talking he said something pretty profound that has stuck with me over the years and I think it applies to music and the process of writing songs. He said that you have to write a lot of **** before you get to your best work. If you're not happy with what your doing now, consider it part of the necessary pile of crap on your way to the good stuff. My two cents. :)

oooOOOOoo...Maki can I!?

Stop writing about stuff nobody including yourself wants to hear about.

I've seen your poetry If you want to write sad depressing sappy love stuff you need to do it with more mystique, listen to some Counting Crows. Unless your talkin musically...then your in the wrong sub-forum.

Good job you posted something that should be in the dudiestflunk's two cent thread. My two cents :)

Doing away with paper money makes everything traceable...This would go a long way to curtail illegal activities, the drug trade ext ("Hurm why do people keep giving this guy 50 bucks day after day?"). Its completely doable, easy money transfer though some nationalized bank could allow you to loan cash to friends and such and pay for private dealings, the infrastructure is already there for plastic to be used for almost anything....

However for that to happen politicians have to give up their under the table dealings and corruption and we know that's not going to happen.

It's also a great way to slowly remove freedoms and enslave society...Uncle Sam knowing that you spent $22.50 last night at "Jims Adult Videos" can't be a good thing.

EDIT: Sorry your thread is so tempting to get involved in sometimes.

We're already seeing this happen in business. It's been like this for a long time. As far as consumers go, I think more and more people are making the choice to move away from this and more towards cash. I have no statistics on this, and I could be wrong. My opinion in this instance is based my own personal opinions and observations of the people around me. On another note, who buys porn anymore? If the government starts tracking you because you bought some porn, it won't be because of your purchasing habits, but might be so they know who to levy the stupid tax on. My two cents. :)

Maki: I recently met a very cute blonde in college. She's an active consumer of ecstasy, she's an ex stripper, and she was convicted of grand theft auto at age 16.

if I pursue this, is she gonna steal my car? :atoz:

next question. Technical Death Metal: Nile or Decapitated?

I'm wondering...Why Asian chicks?

Let her steal a car for your date. Put in a request for a suburban, or some kind of mini van. While you might not date her for long, and I use the term 'date' loosely, you need to make sure that you have a place to hook up other than your place. Drive somewhere far away before have sex with her. Wear a Jimmy and hang on because psycho sex is excellent, even if it's fleeting. Technical death metal. My choice is pfft. My two cents. :)

Maki what do you make of this:

While I don't proclaim to be an expert at playing keyboard, I really only play with my left hand (perhaps this is why I play bass). That leaves my right hand free to hold a beer or do whatever it likes. I'm not really sure what I'm looking at here, nor do I really care. Now, the degree to which you follow the actions of fellow TB'r (no matter how notorius) they are) is beginning to remind me of another TB'r who researched and read up on the folklore to the extent that he proclaimed to be friends with the qintar on AIM. Within a few weeks he became the guy laughing all these old inside jokes way before his time. I'm not saying you're doing the same thing, but it looks like a Meev, and it smells like a Meev... My two cents. :)

Okay. Lemme think, lemme think...

In which of these events do you think you'd be most successful?

Ah a classic. While I wouldn't qualify for the swimming, and I'm not sure if ADD would qualify me for the hundred meter dash for people with absolute no sense of direction, I know for sure I would dominate the marathon for the incontinent. If there's anything that I excel at in this life of mine, it's taking a crap. My two cents :)

A new Sushi/Japanese place opened in town, and we checked it out last night. They seem pretty good, but how do I tell a good place from a not-so-bad. I mean, the food was good, and the waitresses were cute; but is there anything else?

First off, look at the chefs. Are they Japanese? Did they go to school for sushi? In japan, sushi is art. The chefs study it for years. A good joint will hired trained chefs. Most trained chefs are Japanese, but sometimes chefs from other places go to study in japan. It's pretty rare that Korean, American, Chinese, or vietnamese study sushi in japan, and often the not so good sushi joints will put Asian sushi chefs behind the counter to create the effect. I'm not sure why they do this. Sometimes I wonder if they do it because they think most Americans can't tell the difference between people of Asia. I can tell. I'd like to think this isn't the case. Out here in California this happens a lot with Korean owned sushi joints.
Still with all that said, that's not to say that there aren't non Japanese joints with good sushi, they're just rare that's all.

Let's say you don't have a trained chef. Then you need to look at the ingredients. A good chef often shops for the fish personally, or at least knows where and when it was purchased. A good chef will also talk to the fishermen, or at least know where the fish originated. A bad place will only have partial information, and might have older pieces of fish. They key to sushi is the history of the fish and freshness. It matters.

Also look at the rice. Is it hard? Too soft and starchy? Did they use too much vinegar, or too little? What about the seaweed quality? Does it taste good? Is it too tough to chew? You can tell fresh seaweed. It tastes good and it doesn't distract from the ingredients of the roll. California rolls, caterpillar rolls, crunchy rolls and all that are mostly American inventions. Although you're starting to see it in japan a little bit now.

With all that said, most Americans will order California rolls. A good joint will have the option to get real crab instead of imitation crab. I like California rolls, but only with real crab.

Talk to those waitress chicks. Take them out. Some of the sexiest Asian chicks I've ever had the honor of hooking up with have come sushi joints. My two cents. :)
