Malinoski Rodeo Bass prototype

I recently contacted Peter Malinoski of Malinoski Art Guitars to discuss building a custom 32" scale passive fretless bass with similar aesthetics to his Rodeo guitar #68. He's had similar thoughts about designing a Rodeo bass, so the timing is perfect.

Pete wants to build a proto first to work out the kinks before he'll even talk to me about it; fortunately, he has a great work ethic and has hammered out most of the design in mere days.

Ultimately, I'd like a Rodeo bass with the following specs-
32" scale
lined fretless
4 strings
1.5" nut width
19mm string spacing
passive electronics (V/T)
Other than that, I trust Pete's sensibilities and his eye for design.

Good observation. Looks clear up to the 17th or 18th fret. I didn't catch it, but looks like Pete is using a 26 fret extended board on this proto. Personally, I don't venture much above the 12th on fretless, so this wouldn't bother me, but I will mention this to him.

There are some clips of his custom pickups on the malinoski site and lots of pictures of Pete's process on the "Inside the Malinoski Shop" thread on TGP. Definitely worth a look and listen.

I assume the 26fret Fretboard is purely for cosmetic reasons, or maybe some slapping?
impossible to play up there...

otherwise: looks damn good! I'll follow this.

I think the extended fretboard is integral to mounting the neck. I've been meaning to ask Pete about that. He said it is clear up to the 19th or 20th fret, though. Check out the soundclips on his site of the pickups- very cool.

Well you can make a deeper neck pocket without having to extend the fingerboard all the way - for an example check some high-end builders. .
But still: I kinda like the looks.
Browsing his site I got the feeling he's more or less producing art, so it's okay.

PS: check out the pickups on his guitars. Now thats what I call a design integrated into the body..

Yes, Pete does all his own finishes. They're all custom, so no official names, but I think I've seen this color on one of his guitars before.

He got a little testy when I questioned him about it, but the extended board and neck does provide extra glueing surface. If I do order a Rodeo bass, I'll probably specify 24 frets; since it's 32" scale, I might be able to get my tiny fingers up there should I need to
