Once upon a time, when someone would tell me about an obscure band they liked, I would come back with a made up band name of who I liked to listen to in response.

death metal isn't all that new, but it IS all that obscure. Just the nature of the thing.

I never said it was "just like" blues and country, only that music doesn't have to be positive and uplifting to be entertaining, or meaningful, or good. The shocking subject matter common (though not ubiquitous) to metal is mostly escapism, same as horror cinema, which seems to finally be getting some of the respect it deserves. You rolled your eyes at the music I love and I called you on it. As I said before, metal isn't for everyone and it isn't meant for everyone. Many styles of music aren't for me and aren't meant for me, but you don't see me—or those with an appreciation of metal generally—rolling our eyes at you so regularly. You don't have to like metal any more than you have to like horror movies, but I would appreciate people not taking every opportunity to knock it just because it's not for them.

It also doesn't have to be meaningful or good to be entertaining either. I'm not trying to point a finger at you, I take a lot of road trips and put up a lot of death and cattle decapitation during said trips - plenty of great classic country songs out there, plenty of great death metal, too, it's all just different strokes. Don't listen to the guy too much, he clearly doesn't get it and doesn't want to and you don't owe him an explanation.

In the spirit of open mindedness, I checked out a few of these bands. They the three I checked out, with a few minor differences sounded pretty much the same to me. Down tuned instruments, mid tempo, same kind of riffs and the singing, or whatever it's called.. Oy.

It doesn't appeal to me at all. And I consider myself -very- open minded when it comes to music.

BTW, in fairness, these bands are in one or more of the extremely narrow subgenres of metal and most people aren't going to know they exist. Thinking W-T-F is this, seems pretty reasonable.

I love metal...old school metal like Judas Priest and even stuff like Queensryche... been to tons of metal shows and played a bunch of it in bands. Modern metal is a whole different thing and I'm really tired of the death culture in this country.
The metal scene took a big dump when the moshing thing started. Been to just a few shows where that crap started up. Those people weren't there for music, they were there to shove other people around on the floor as the band "played"...

"Escapism" ?? people covering their bodies in death images, disfiguring their ears with those hula hoop earrings, chains connecting their ear and nostrils, BIG time attitudes and violent rage going to a "concert" where the entire point of it is to get abused by the other "fans" while the band plays music that has ZERO melody and lyrics that preach violence and death. I think it's a bit past "escapism"..

What bass player in death metal is on par with someone like oh, Chris Squire, who has already gone down as one of the most influential bass players of all time.... you know, something like "Heart of the Sunrise" in death metal ??

You can apply all kinds of musical techniques and styles with lots of different music...what death metal bass technique or style can be brought to other music to mix it up a little and make it interesting on a melody and harmony level?

Bass sounds like CRAP. What can ANYONE get out of this ? Sounds like some DORK riffing at Guitar Center trying to grab attention.....

Not to critique your position as a radio person, but if I relied on radio for what I listened to I wouldn't be exposed to many new artists. Radio is (in my opinion) the most conservative/risk averse medium out there. This has resulted in genres and sub-genres that fly under the radar of casual listeners because they don't delude themselves with the fantasy that radio will ever play their music. As a result they follow their muse and play music that they love. A lot of it isn't for me, but I am glad there is so much variety out there to listen to.

Some of the best music that I've found was when I had Sirius and just went channel surfing. Some great stuff out there that definitely flies below conventional terrestrial radio radar. Not all of what I found was for me, but a lot of it has since found its way into my Spotify playlists and have resulted in Amazon music album purchases.

It seemed like when I was a kid growing up in the late 80s and early 90s, radio was a bit more daring. Then again, that could just be a memory through the lens of nostalgia and not accurate at all.

An opinion is "I don't like death metal because it lacks things I find important to me in music." See, and I didn't have to take a dump on someone's admitted preferred genre to express that opinion.
