Man Vs. Wild = busted

I like both Survivorman and Man vs Wild, but for different reasons.

Les has a much tougher job, just having to film himself, even if he wasnt alone, which he is to my knowledge. Toting all that gear, hiking everything twice almost, ect. That being said, Les avoids dangerous situations, and wouldnt dream of putting himself in harm's way any more than necessary to show you how to get out of it if it happened to you.

Bear on the other hand, since he has a safety net, will do the craziest things to show you how to get out, like the quick sand, or his climbing stuff. Jumping into a frozen bog, whatever.

They both teach you things, but if I was in the wild, Id be much more likely to follow Les' advice in almost all situations. A lot of the things Bear does arent even possible for the average human being. That guy can climb like a monkey, has an iron stomach (Ive never even seen him really flinch at sick foods), and is in great shape.

Both shows are entertaining :)

Has there ever been a reality show that is real?

It's funny how they mislead you to believe reality shows are infact real, but its a GIVEN that they are only trying to mimic a real dangerous situation and environment, especially in Bears case.

Ive watched the show to the point where I could say ive seen almost every episode more than once, but ive always suspected that it wasnt real, or was only real to a certain degree.

It's entertaining none the less, and I will probably continue to watch it.

If a scenario is a possibilty, then the SAS will train for it. Liksay, if on an operation they might encounter quicksand, they'll be trained in what to do. Of course, I don't think his bush craft skills match up with say, Ray Mears, but he knows his way around.

I agree that in some instances they will, but usually even if they might encounter it on the mission then they won't train for it, unless for some reason they MUST go through it...but those guys are smart enough to figure out how to get around it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you probably haven't done any military survival training.

and actually i have. i still stick with my statement that most military survival schools don't train in how to get out of quicksand and crazy stuff like that. i'm not saying they won't tell them how to, but they won't do a practical exercise where they actually have to do it. Mountain survival is pretty common, i'll give you that, but the stuff thats not around or readily (sp?) available, such as quicksand, they aren't going to try and do an exercise with it. and like i said, most survival training is with evasion and escape, and yes, there is survival skills taught, but its not as indepth as you'd think. if you went through a survival school that taught all the things these guys on the show do (to where you can actually do it as well as these guys can) then you'd be in training for a long ass time.

I'm not saying SAS or SF or whatever SOF unit can't survive or can't handle himself in a situation like these shows portray, but you also have to remember that they have survival experts than consult with them and the show, which makes it a little easier to know what to do...see what i'm saying? i was born and raised in a military town where there are 2 special forces groups, where they train special forces, JSOC, PJs, CCT, CAG, etc etc, known many SOF operators and am currently in a SOF group (but not an SF A team). so i'm not completely unkown with the subject. of course i'm not subject matter expert, i'm just stating my opinion. so i've known alot of operators and i can only name a few that are THAT badass as to be able to survive in any condition. i'm not trying to bash the dudes history, anyone to make it into SAS is badass.

I don't know much about how the SAS structure is, but i know we have group with target regions. Does SAS have target regions or what? That would actually explain alot to me.

I figured a lot of things were staged on most of those shows - it is television. I've seen the one with the Canadian guy a couple times. I'm suspect of that one, as well.

It does not spoil the show for me. I will still find it entertaining. TV is meant to be fake.

If you wanna see a guy eat some weird stuff, watch "bizzarre foods" . Testicles, steamed duck embryos (as in eggs with little baby birds in them), suckling pigs, all kinds of bugs/snakes/worms and stuff.....

agreed. i've always liked survivorman, but never watched man vs. wild much. i saw the one the other day with the raft. it still entertaining and i'll watch it...unless something better is on of course.

yeah...my mom pointed out that it was a fake...because he's taking healthy branches off of a tree to make his shelter in the amazon (or where-ever he was, I don't remember). My mom started shouting at the TV about how you're not supposed to CUT branches off of a tree, you're supposed to FIND already dead branches off the ground. Which anyone could probably pose a decent argument (sp?) to, but in girl scouts, thats what we learned. so yeah. I've known he was a fake for a while.

He's still a badass in my book if he drinks elephant crap juice.

BUT - was that real elephant crap (or a "stand in")????

I had my doubts as well.....I think it would be very difficult to have a crew nearby and to not get any assistance from them....also, the camera always seem to be in the "best place" to get a good shot of him going down a river, climbing a 100 ft tree, going over a water fall, etc......some of it HAS to be staged....

also - how can someone survive and have as much energy as he does after eating only one grub all day? can't happen....
