Managing Active/Passive Rigs while gigging

Imagine having a live rig that consists of a couple passive basses, a couple with active preamps, a tuner and a compressor on the board, and then an amp. Let's assume the amp has a button for active/passive padding.

Do you guys tend to use the pad button on the amp? Compensate with a boost pedal with the passives? Change the gain on the Compressor? Something else?

You also have to assume that the levels on these basses are significantly different by virtue of being passive or active (with active basses being equal and always hotter than passives), which isn't necessarily the case.

I'm not a high bass count guy, but with one exception, I've never found any of my basses (active or passive) to be so wildly different from each other that I had to have a strategy to deal with them. I had a Lakeland 55-02 that was super hot on active, but that was an adjustment the previous owner had made, and I changed the output gain on a trim pot inside the control cavity to match the passive and active levels.

I am now using a Lehle 3@1 switcher. I normally cable 2 basses, sometimes 3. I just gain balance at the Lehle and forget about it. I know where each of my basses needs to be set as I spent a little time dialing thing in look at a LED Ladder on a mixer wheel setting levels.

I've been taking that approach a long time. First with a Radial Bassbone, the a Radial BigShot i/o. now the Lehle. For me... it just works.
 
Generally I try to have all my basses set at generally the same output volume by adjusting the internal gain trimpots on basses with active circuits to match one another, and if I am bringing a passive bass then I can also match the actives to that one bass. I've never tried to gig with multiple active and passive basses with wildly different outputs, but if I did I would probably set as many at equal as possible using the process I just mentioned and then have a clean boost or EQ to adjust as needed for the rest.

Ideally each bass needs its own gain structure and tone controls. So if you are running two basses, you need two channels. If you don't have enough channels, you figure out the best way to achieve the desired results. This depends on your gear and the way you think.

Here are some examples: I use to switch between upright bass and bass guitar using an AB switch into a single channel amp. Additionally, I need two volume levels for the upright, and it did not have a volume control. I did the best I could to adjust the tone controls for good sound on both instruments. Obviously, it was somewhat of a compromise as upright bass and bass guitar tend to sound very different. I used the amp's gain control and the bass guitar's volume control to manage how loud I played. Not a great solution, but its what I had available, so I made the best of it.

A few years later I ran a single channel bass amp that had an auxillary rack space and an effects loop. I installed a 31 band GEQ in the effects loop. I still used the AB switch to select the active instrument. I also toggled the GEQ in and out of the circuit. I dialed in a basic using the amps controls, and then I used the GEQ to tailor the tone and gain structure for upright bass. This was a pretty significant improvement.

My last touring rig used a rack mixer and a power amp. It was essentially a mini PA system. I switched between upright bass, electric upright bass, and bass guitar. Each instrument had a dedicated channel with gain, EQ, and a mute switch. This was very close to ideal. The channels had bass, treble, and semi-parametric mids. The only thing more I would have wanted was a second band of semi-parametric mids.

As far as whether you should use the active or passive switch on your amp. It may or may not be useful. Typically, the switch does two things of consequence: 1. I changes the sensitivity of the preamp by approximately 7-15dB. The change in attenuation varies by the model of amp. 2. Often this sort of switch has an impact on the amp's input impedance. This can produce a subtle change to the tone and response of an instrument. Passive instrument tend to be more sensitive to input impedance than active instruments. The impedance change also varies by the model of amp. Some input pads change the impedance, and some do not.

IMHO, consult your owner's manual to try and learn exactly what your input pad does.

IMHO Active/Passive is a bit of a misnomer. It's entirely okay to run an active instrument into a passive input as long as you are not getting undesired distortion. I have a fairly large collection of amps, and normally run an active bass unto the amp's passive input. I do have one amp where I may need to run the input pad. The choice depends on if I want a clean sound or a bit of drive.

I have an EQ2 that I do a little shaping and a lot of level matching. A simple patch for each bass. I found my active basses are not always louder and a volume pedal is putting a lot on your guess. If I set an amp and measure dB for the bass and keep other settings constant I can get pretty consistent. Then I can raise/lower the amp as needed during sound check.

I use a TC Mini-Spark to cover a difference in output gain between 2 basses on a gig. It sits on a pedalboard with my tuner and my REDDI DI.

Honestly, I have to crack the Mini-Spark up just a little bit to offset the differences in the basses (And I'm fortunate that the tones are very similar, no adjustments needed between basses there). It may not have worth the trouble to add it, but it does work, it's in the loop now and it works fine.

Switchable, adjustable pre-amps. Expandable...you can add another one to make a 6 to 1 if you want. I use my active bass as the tell. It requires the pad to be engaged on my GK-1001rbii in order to have some control of the gain throttle. So, no pre-amp engagement for the pre-amp equipped bass and compensating pre-amp for the passive bass and XLR to balanced mono for microphone input for woodwinds (sax and flute pedal effects...engage!).

I have only switched between a passive and an active bass on a gig only once. I didn't mess with the db cut pad. I just turned down the volume on my bass.

I can certainly understand trying to manage multiple effects and different basses being challenging and a bit of a juggling act maintaining a consistent volume level. So mostly, I use one one bass and one EQ for the entire gig.

I rarely bring more than two bases to a gig, so I'm happy with the aforementioned Radial
Bassbone, but it's the original version. You're given the ability to tweak each input EQ, plus there's the FX loop that many other preamps lack. If I had to get more complicated, and because I'm cheap, I'd use what I already have to expand…

But obviously no levels on the Morley, and the ART(and similar other units)doesn't have switches.

Do you guys tend to use the pad button on the amp? I have done this very recently after trading for a Sterling by MM sub series Sting Ray that had an unbelievable hot output. I switched between it and a parts P-bass that has a Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickup with below average output. The 10 db pad on the input of my GK MB500 was very close to equalizing these two basses.

Compensate with a boost pedal with the passives? Yes, I do use a Boss EQ pedal with just the level slider up slightly when I play my Jazz bass with below average output.

Change the gain on the Compressor? Yes. I use a Boss Bass limiter / enhancer that I adjust for the bass I'm playing, if I am going to use the limiter / enhancer on the upcoming song.

I think I'd just use the volume knob on each bass, but good lord I'd never bring 4 basses to a gig in the first place.

Generally speaking I don't use the pad unless I'm overdriving something. One bass, wide open into DI that feeds both the board and my amp. Tweak the master on my amp if stage volume needs change. I try not change anything going to the board except on board tone settings, and gently so that I'm not screwing around with the gain going to FOH too much.

I would set my amp level with the bass having the lowest output. Then I would turn down the volume of the other basses to match it accordingly. To be honest, it seems like at lot of extra work. I've never been able to change basses during a set. There just isn't enough time between songs for me so I just use the same bass and change the EQ and pup configuration to suite the song. (jmho)
